Innovative approach to teach the cultural background and behaviors of first-century Judeans. Examples are given in the form of brief scenarios of typical interactions culminating in some conflict or unexpected behavior. Malina then explains why the outcome is different than that expected by a modern American. These insights are then compared to relevant passages in the New Testament. I found this to be easy to read while providing many valuable insights. Two minor observations are that the material is a bit repetitious and the author cites his own works relentlessly.Chapter headings are: 1. Honor and Shame; 2. General Interpersonal Behavior; 3. In-Group; 4. Intra-Family Relations; 5. Out-Group; 6. Loving-Kindness; 7. Common Values; 8. Concept of Time.
