: 4 With mercy and with judgment My web of time he wove; the dews of sorrow I'll bless the Heart that plann'd, In Emmanuel's land. Fill’d with his likeness rise To see him with these eyes. My presence doth command, In Emmanuel's land. But her dear bridegroom's face; But on my King of grace;- But on his piercèd hand ;- Of Emmanuel's land. 239 Here have we no continuing city, but we seek [78. 6s. one to come. -Heb. xiii. 14. PART I. 1 BRIEF life is here our portion; brief sorrow, short-lived care; The life that knows no ending, the tearless life, is there. O happy retribution: short toil, eternal rest : For mortals and for sinners a mansion with the bless'd. 2 And now we fight the battle, but then shall wear the crown Of full and everlasting and passionless ronown : But he, whom now we trust in, shall then be seen and known; And they, that know and see him, shall have him for their own. 3 The morning shall awaken, the shadows shall decay, And each true-hearted servant shall shine as doth the day : There God, our King and Portion, in fulness of his grace, Shall we behold for ever, and worship face to face. PART II. 1 For thee, O dear, dear Country, mine eyes their vigils keep; For very love, beholding thy happy name, they weep. The mention of thy glory is unction to the breast, And medicine in sickness, and love, and life, and rest. 2 O one, O only mansion, O Paradise of joy, Where tears are ever banish’d, and smiles have no alloy; The Lamb is all thy splendour, the Crucified thy praise; His laud and benediction thy ransom'd people raise. 3 With jasper glow tny bulwarks, thy streets with emeralds blaze ; The sardius and the topaz unite in thee their rays; Thine ageless walls are bonded with amethyst unpriced; The saints build up its fabric, and the Corner stone is Christ. 4 Thou hast no shore, fair ocean; thou hast no time, bright day : Dear fountain of refreshment to pilgrims, far away. Upon the Rock of Ages they raise thy holy tower; Thine is the victor's laurel, and thine the golden dower. PART III. 1 JERUSALEM the golden, with milk and honey bless'd, Beneath thy contemplation sink heart and voice oppress’d; I know not, O! I know not, what joys await us there; What radiancy of glory, what bliss beyond compare. 2 They stand, those halls of Zion, all jubilant with song, ز And bright with many an angel, and all the martyr throng; The Prince is ever in them, the daylight is serene; The pastures of the blessed are deck'd in glorious sheen. 3 There is the throne of David; and there from care released, The shout of them that triumph, the song of them that feast; And they, who with their Leader have conquer'd in the fight, GENERAL ENDING. elect! expect ! Jesus, in mercy bring us to that dear land of rest: Who art, with God the Father, and Spirit, evir bless'd. Amen. 240 And so shall we ever be with the Lord. 1 Thess. iv. 17. [P.M. 1 “ FOR ever”-beatific word : A bond no death can sever! With Jesus and for ever! And see him still before me; To all the saints in glory. What must it be in heaven! Thy sins are all forgiven.' When I in glory hear him! Invites me to come near him ; 5 “ Come in, thou blessèd, sit by me; Come, taste my perfect favour : For he must stay for ever.” wahitsuntide. “O GOD THE HOLY GHOST, PROCEEDING FROM THE FATHER AND THE SON, HAVE MERCY UPON us." 241 I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh. [L.M. Joel ii. 28. O shed thine influence from above, The wonders of this sacred day. Be God's surpassing glory sung: The acts our great Redeemer wrought. Still o'er thy holy Church preside ; Spirit of mercy, truth, and love. 242 He shall give you another Comforter, that he [C.M. may abide with you for ever. - John xiv. 16. To thee for help we cry, Of dark mortality. Or tongues of various tone; With fervour in our own. G |
