FACULTIES OF ARTS AND PRACTICAL SCIENCE.

MINERALOGY I.

Elementary Mineralogy and Blowpipe Analysis.

1. Sketch the models submitted, name the crystal forms present, indicating the faces in the sketches by arbitrary letters.

2. Give, with Naumann's symbols in each case, the simple forms of the triclinic system.

3. By means of mineral examples, explain what is meant by the following terms: (a) rock-forming minerals, (b) accessory minerals, (c) appellative minerals, (d) secondary minerals.

4. Describe carefully the mineral specimen submitted, giving name, chemical composition, physical properties,

etc.

5. Describe the following mineral species:-(a) galenite, (b) sphalerite, (c) fluorite, (d) chalcopyrite, (e) pyrrhotite, (f) barite, (m) arsenopyrite, (o) albite, (p) scapolite.

Practical.

6. By means of the blowpipe determine the numbered specimens, and by field tests the lettered specimens.

FACULTY OF PRACTICAL SCIENCE.

PASS GEOLOGY OR GEOLOGY I

1. Describe the formation and the movement of a glacier; enumerate briefly the geological effects.

2. Account for the formation of volcanoes, and name their various products.

3. Define the following: thrust, acidic rocks, unconformity, fault, strike, porphyritic, breccia, boss, kaolin, gneiss.

4. Igneous rocks are often classified into Plutonic, Dyke, and Volcanic types. Define these terms, name three representatives of each class, and describe in detail any three of the rocks named by you.

5. Describe the formation of limestones, sandstones, and shales; and name their metamorphic representatives.

6. What evidences can you give for the existence of life on the earth before Cambrian times.

7. Describe the reptilian and bird-life of Mesozoic times.

8. Describe by word or diagram the following fossils, and give the age of which each is characteristic: orthoceras, sigillaria, paradoxides, cephalaspis, calamites, arthrophycus, spirifera mucronata, mesohyppus, mastodon, heliophyllum.

C,

9. Describe and name the rock specimens labelled A, B,

J.

10. Name, give the class, and the age of the fossils labelled 1, 2, 3, ... 10.
