The Story of the Pharisee and the Publican.

(From the 18th Chapter of ST. LUKE's Gospel.)

"Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself: 'God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, 'God be merciful to me a sinner!' I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted."

The Story of the Raising of Jairns's Daughter.

(From the Gospels of Sr. MARK and ST. LUKE.)

A MAN named Jairus, a ruler of the synagogue, came and fell down at Jesus' feet, and besought that he would come into his house; for he had one only daughter; about twelve years of age, and she lay a dying. And there came one from the ruler of the synagogue's house, saying unto him, "Thy daughter is dead; trouble not the master!" But when Jesus heard it, he answered him, saying, "Fear not: believe only, and she shall be made whole."

And when he came into the house, he suffered no man to go in save Peter, and James, and John, and the father and the mother of the maiden. And all wept and bewailed her; but he said, “Weep not; she is not dead, but sleepeth." And they laughed him to scorn, knowing that she was dead.

And he put them all out, and took her by the hand, and called, saying, “Maid, arise." And her spirit came straightway and she arose and walked; for she was of the age of twelve years.

The Story of the Raising of Lazarus.

(From the 11th Chapter of ST. JOHn's Gospel.)

Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha. (It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.) Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, "Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick." When Jesus heard that, he said, "This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby." Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was. Then after that saith he to his disciples, "Let us go into Judea again." His disciples say unto him, "Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again?" Jesus answered, "Are there not twelve hours in the day? if any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world; but if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him." These things said he and after that he saith unto them, "Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him
