So Jonathan arose from the table in fierce anger, and did eat no meat:...for he was grieved for David, because his father had done him shame.-34.

And it came to pass in the morning, that Jonathan went out into the field at the time appointed with David...35.

...David arose...and fell on his face to the ground, and bowed himself three times: and they kissed one another, and wept one with another, until David exceeded.-41.

And Jonathan said to David, Go in peace, forasmuch as we have sworn both of us in the name of the Lord, saying, The Lord be between me and thee, and between my seed and thy seed for ever.-42.

Saul and Jonathan were lovely and pleasant in their lives, and in their death they were not divided. ...2 Sam. i. 23.

How are the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle! O Jonathan, thou wast slain in thine high places.-25.

I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan : very pleasant hast thou been unto me: thy love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women.-26.

And David said, Is there yet any that is left of the house of Saul, that I may shew him kindness for Jonathan's sake?-2 Sam. ix. 1.

...And Ziba said unto the king, Jonathan has yet a son, which is lame on his feet.-3.

Now when Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan... was come unto David,...2 Sam. ix. 6.

David said unto him, Fear not: for I will surely shew thee kindness for Jonathan thy father's sake, and will restore thee all the land of Saul thy father; and thou shalt eat bread at my table continually.-7.

Then said David, I will shew kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father shewed kindness unto me. And David sent to comfort him by the hand of his servants for his father...2 Sam. x. 2.

And it came to pass when Hushai the Archite, David's friend, was come unto Absalom, that Hushai said unto Absalom, God save the king, God save the king.-2 Sam. xvi. 16.

And Absalom said to Hushai, Is this thy kindness to thy friend? why wentest thou not with thy friend ?—17.

And Hiram king of Tyre sent his servants unto Solomon; for he had heard that they had anointed him king in the room of his father: for Hiram was ever a lover of David.—1 Kings v. 1.

Now when Job's three friends heard of all this evil that was come upon him, they came every one from his own place;...for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him and to comfort him.-Job ii. 11.

And when they lifted up their eyes afar off, and knew him not, they lifted up their voice, and wept ;...12.

So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, and none spake a word unto him for they saw that his grief was very great.-13.

To him that is afflicted pity should be shewed from his friend.-Job vi. 14.

And the Lord turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends...Job xlii. 10.

Then came there unto him all his brethren, and all his sisters, and all they that had been of his acquaintance before, and did eat bread with him in his house and they bemoaned him, and comforted him over all the evil that the Lord had brought upon him: every man also gave him a piece of money, and every one an earring of gold.—11.

As for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth :... Ps. xxxv. 13.

I behaved myself as though he had been my friend or brother: I bowed down heavily, as mourneth for his mother.-14.

A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born

for adversity. Prov. xvii. 17.

A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a

brother.-Prov. xviii. 24.

Faithful are the wounds of a friend...Prov. xxvii. 6. Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart: so doth the sweetness of a man's friend by hearty counsel.—9. Thine own friend, and thy father's friend, forsake not;...for better is a neighbour that is near than a brother far off.-10.

As in water face answereth to face, so the heart of man to man.-19.

THE RELIGIOUS USE OF MUSIC, AND ITS INFLUENCE.

He (Jubal) was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ.-Gen. iv. 21.

Thus the Lord saved Israel that day... Ex. xiv. 30. Then sang Moses and the children of Israel this song unto the Lord, and spake, saying, I will sing unto the Lord, for he hath triumphed gloriously. ...Ex. xv. 1.

And Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a timbrel in her hand; and all the women went out after her with timbrels and with dances.-20.

And Miriam answered them, Sing ye to the Lord, for he hath triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider hath he thrown into the sea.-21.

...It is not the voice of them that shout for mastery, neither is it the voice of them that cry for being overcome: but the noise of them that sing do I hear.Ex. xxxii. 18.

Then Israel sang this song, Spring up, O well; sing ye unto it :-Num. xxi. 17.

Then sang Deborah and Barak,...Judg. v. 1.

Praise ye the Lord for the avenging of Israel,...2.

I, even I, will sing unto the Lord; I will sing praise to the Lord God of Israel.-Judg. v. 3.

And Saul's servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.-1 Sam. xvi. 15.

:

Let our lord now command thy servants,...to seek out a man, who is a cunning player on a harp and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.-16.

And Saul said,...Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me.-17.

Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, that is cunning in playing,...and the Lord is with him.-18.

And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took a harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well,...23.

And it came to pass as they came, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, that the women came out of all cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet King Saul, with tabrets, with joy, and with instruments of musick.1 Sam. xviii. 6.

And the women answered one another as they played, and said, Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.-7.

And David arose, and went with all the people that
