THE SIN OF DECEIT AND

HYPOCRISY.

...Let not Pharaoh deal deceitfully any more in not letting the people go to sacrifice to the Lord.-Ex. viii. 29.

If a soul sin, and commit a trespass against the Lord, and lie unto his neighbour in that which was delivered him to keep,...or hath deceived his neighbour;-Lev. vi. 2.

Then it shall be, because he hath sinned, and is guilty, that he shall restore...the thing which he hath deceitfully gotten.-4.

...The hypocrite's hope shall perish.-Job viii. 13.

Will ye speak wickedly for God? and talk deceitfully for him?—Job xiii. 7.

Knowest thou not this of old, since man was placed upon earth,-Job xx. 4.

That the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment ?-5.

All the while my breath is in me, and the spirit of God is in my nostrils ;-Job xxvii. 3.

My lips shall not speak wickedness, nor my tongue utter deceit.-4.

For what is the hope of the hypocrite, though he hath gained, when God taketh away his soul?—8. ...The hypocrites in heart heap up wrath...Job xxxvi. 13. ...With flattering lips and with a double heart do they speak.-Ps. xii. 2.

Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile...Ps. xxxiv. 13.

...O deliver me from the deceitful and unjust man.— Ps. xliii. 1.

... Unto the wicked God saith, What hast thou to do to declare my statutes, or that thou shouldest take my covenant in thy mouth ?—Ps. l. 16.

Thou givest thy mouth to evil, and thy tongue frameth deceit.-19.

Thou sittest and speakest against thy brother; thou slanderest thine own mother's son.-20.

The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war was in his heart; his words were softer than oil, yet were they drawn swords.-Ps. lv. 21.

He that worketh deceit shall not dwell within my house... Ps. ci. 7.

Deliver my soul, O Lord, from lying lips, and from a deceitful tongue.-Ps. cxx. 2.

An hypocrite with his mouth destroyeth his neighbour... Prov. xi. 9.

...The counsels of the wicked are deceit.-Prov. xii. 5.

Deceit is in the heart of them that imagine evil...20. Bread of deceit is sweet to a man; but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.-Prov. xx. 17. ...Deceive not with thy lips.-Prov. xxiv. 28.

He that hateth dissembleth with his lips, and layeth up deceit within him ;-Prov. xxvi. 24.

When he speaketh fair, believe him not: for there are seven abominations in his heart.-25.

Whose hatred is covered by deceit, his wickedness. shall be shewed before the whole congregation.-26. ...The kisses of an enemy are deceitful.-Prov. xxvii. 6.

And they bend their tongues like their bow for lies: but they are not valiant for the truth upon the earth; for they proceed from evil to evil, and they know not me, saith the Lord.-Jer. ix. 3.

Take ye heed every one of his neighbour, and trust ye not in any brother: for every brother will utterly supplant, and every neighbour will walk with slanders.-4.

And they will deceive every one his neighbour, and will not speak the truth: they have taught their tongue to speak lies,...5.

Thine habitation is in the midst of deceit; through deceit they refuse to know me, saith the Lord.-6.

Their tongue is as an arrow shot out; it speaketh deceit one speaketh peaceably to his neighbour with his mouth, but in heart he layeth his wait.-8.

Shall I not visit them for these things? saith the Lord...9.

The remnant of Israel shall not do iniquity, nor speak lies; neither shall a deceitful tongue be found in their mouth.-Zeph. iii. 13.

THE DUTY OF REPROVING SIN.

...Thou shalt in any wise rebuke thy neighbour, and not suffer sin upon him.-Lev. xix. 17.

And the Lord sent Nathan unto David. And he came unto him, and said unto him, There were two men in one city; the one rich, and the other poor. -2 Sam. xii. 1.

The rich man had exceeding many flocks and herds:-2.

But the poor man had nothing, save one little ewe lamb, which he had bought and nourished up: and it grew up together with him, and with his children; it did eat of his own meat, and drank of his own cup, and lay in his bosom ;...3.

And there came a traveller unto the rich man, and he spared to take of his own flock and of his own herd,...but took the poor man's lamb,...4.

And David's anger was greatly kindled against the man; and he said,...As the Lord liveth, the man that hath done this thing shall surely die :— -5. ...Because he did this thing, and because he had no pity.-6.

And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man...7.

Wherefore hast thou despised the commandment of the Lord, to do evil in his sight ?-2 Sam. xii. 9.

And David said,...I have sinned against the Lord. And Nathan said unto David, The Lord hath also put away thy sin; thou shalt not die.-13.

Howbeit, because by this deed thou hast given great occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme, the child also that is born unto thee shall surely die.-14.

...Uphold me with thy free spirit.-Ps. li. 12.

Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.-13.

Let the righteous smite me; it shall be a kindness: and let him reprove me; it shall be an excellent oil, which shall not break my head...Ps. cxli. 5.

...Reproofs of instruction are the way of life.Prov. vi. 23.

...Rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee.Prov. ix. 8.

...He that refuseth reproof erreth.-Prov. x. 17. ...He that regardeth reproof shall be honoured.— Prov. xiii. 18.

...He that regardeth reproof is prudent.-Prov. xv. 5. The ear that heareth the reproof of life abideth among the wise.-31.

...He that heareth reproof getteth understanding.—32. A reproof entereth more into a wise man than an hundred stripes into a fool.-Prov. xvii. 10.
