The foolishness of man perverteth his way: and his heart fretteth against the Lord.-Prov. xix. 3.

Say not thou, What is the cause that the former days were better than these ? for thou dost not enquire wisely concerning this.-Eccl. vii. 10.

They also that erred in spirit shall come to understanding, and they that murmured shall learn doctrine.-Isa. xxix. 24.

Woe is me for my hurt! my wound is grievous: but I said, Truly this is a grief, and I must bear it. -Jer. x. 19.

It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the Lord.-Lam. iii. 26.

He sitteth alone and keepeth silence, because he hath borne it upon him.-28.

Wherefore doth a living man complain, a man for the punishment of his sins ?—39.

...O Lord, take, I beseech thee, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live.-Jonah iv: 3.

Then said the Lord, Doest thou well to be angry?—4. I will bear the indignation of the Lord, because I have sinned against him...Micah vii. 9.

PRAYER IN TROUBLE.

And she (Hannah) was in bitterness of soul, and prayed unto the Lord, and wept sore.-1 Sam. i. 10.

And said,...I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit :... but have poured out my soul before the Lord.—15. ...For out of the abundance of my complaint and grief have I spoken hitherto.-16.

And he (David) said, while the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept: for I said, Who can tell whether God will be gracious to me, that the child may live?-2 Sam. xii. 22.

My soul is weary of my life; I will leave my complaint upon myself; I will speak in the bitterness of my soul.-Job x. 1.

My friends scorn me: but mine eye poureth out tears unto God.-Job xvi. 20.

Mine eye also is dim by reason of sorrow, and all my members are as a shadow.—Job xvii. 7.

Lord, how are they increased that trouble me! many are they that rise up against me.-Ps. iii. 1.

O Lord, rebuke me not in thine anger, neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure.-Ps. vi. 1.

Have mercy upon me, O Lord; for I am weak: O Lord, heal me; for my bones are vexed.-Ps. vi. 2. My soul is also sore vexed; but thou, O Lord, how long ?-3.

I am weary with my groaning; all the night make I my bed to swim; I water my couch with my tears.-6. Mine eye is consumed because of grief...7.

Have mercy upon me, O Lord; consider my trouble which I suffer of them that hate me,... Ps. ix. 13.

Why standest thou afar off, O Lord? why hidest thou thyself in times of trouble ?-Ps. x. 1.

How long wilt thou forget me, O Lord? for ever? how long wilt thou hide thy face from me?-Ps. xiii. 1.

How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart daily ?-2.

My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring ?-Ps. xxii. 1.

O my God, I cry in the day time, but thou hearest not; and in the night season, and am not silent.—2.

But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people.-6.

All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying,-7. He trusted on the Lord that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him.-8.

Be not far from me; for trouble is near; for there is none to help.-11.

I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax... Ps. xxii. 14. ...Thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day.-Ps. xxv. 5.

Turn thee unto me, and have mercy upon me; for I am desolate and afflicted.-16.

The troubles of my heart are enlarged: O bring thou me out of my distresses.-17.

Look upon mine affliction and my pain...18. Redeem Israel, O God, out of all his troubles.-22. Hide not thy face far from me; put not thy servant away in anger: thou hast been my help; leave me not, neither forsake me, O God of my salvation.— Ps. xxvii. 9.

Bow down thine ear to me; deliver me speedily: be thou my strong rock, for an house of defence to save me.-Ps. xxxi. 2.

Have mercy upon me, O Lord, for I am in trouble: mine eye is consumed with grief.-9.

For my life is spent with grief, and my years with sighing...10.

I was a reproach among all mine enemies, but especially among my neighbours, and a fear to mine acquaintance: they that did see me without fled from me.-11.

I am forgotten as a dead man out of mind: I am like a broken vessel.-12.

For I have heard the slander of many: fear was on every side...13.

My times are in thy hand: deliver me from the hand of mine enemies, and from them that persecute me.- Ps. xxxi. 15.

Make thy face to shine upon thy servant: save me for thy mercies' sake.-16.

For I said in my haste, I am cut off from before thine eyes nevertheless thou heardest the voice of my supplications when I cried unto thee.-22.

For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me... Ps. xxxii. 4.

O Lord, rebuke me not in thy wrath neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure.-Ps. xxxviii. 1.

For thine arrows stick fast in me, and thy hand presseth me sore.-2.

I am troubled; I am bowed down greatly; I go mourning all the day long.-6.

I am feeble and sore broken: I have roared by reason of the disquietness of my heart.-8.

My heart panteth, my strength faileth me as for the light of mine eyes, it also is gone from me.-10. My lovers and my friends stand aloof from my sore; and my kinsmen stand afar off.-11.

But I, as a deaf man, heard not; and I was as a dumb man that openeth not his mouth.-13.

For in thee, O Lord, do I hope: thou wilt hear, O Lord my God.-15.

For I am ready to halt, and my sorrow is continually before me.-17.
