Saul acknowledgeth bis fault. Chap. xxvii. xxviñ. David dwelleth in Ziklag. 263

And it was told Saul that David was fled to Gath: and he fought no more a gain for him.

5¶ And David faid unto Achish, If I have now found grace in thine eyes, let them give me a place in fome town in the country, that I may dwell there: for, Why thould thy fervant dwell in the royal city with thee?

AND David faid in his heart, I fall Bow perish one day by the hand of Saul there is nothing better for me than that I hould fpeedily efcape into the land of the Philiftines; and Saul hall defpair of me, to feek me any more in any coaft of Ifrael: To fhall I efcape out of his hand.

CHAP. XXVIII. 3 Saul having deftroyed the witches, 7 afterward jeekerb to one; who being encouraged by bim, raifeth up Samuel. 15 Saul's rain forefbewed.

AND it came to pafs in thofe days, that the Philistines gathered their armies together for warfare, to fight with Ifrael. And Achish faid unto David, Know thou affuredly, that thou shalt go out with me to battle, thou and thy men.

2 And David faid to Achith, Surely thou shalt know what thy fervant can do. And Achifh faid to David, therefore will I make thee keeper of mine head for ever

3 Now Samuel was dead, and all Ifrael had lamented him, and buried him in Ramah, even in his own city. 6 And when Saul inquired of the LORD, the LORD answered him not. neither by dreams, nor by Urim, nor by prophets. 7¶ Then faid Saul unto his fervants, Seek me a woman that hath a familiar fpirit, that I may go to her, and inquire of her. And his fervants faid to him, Behold, there is a woman that hath a familiar fpirit at Endor.

22 Now, therefore, I pray thee,hearken thou alfo unto the voice of thine handmaid, and let me fet a morfel of bread before thee; and eat, that thou may eft have ftrength, when thou goelt on thy way.

23 But he refufed, and faid, I will not eat. But his fervants, together with the woman, compelled him and he hearkened unto their voice. So he arose from the earth, and fat upon the bed.

Wherefore now return, and go in peace, that thou displease not the lords of the Philistines.

8 And David faid unto Achith, But what have I done? and, What halt thou found in thy fervant fo long as I have been with thee unto this day, that I may not go fight against the enemies of my lord the king?

9 And Achish anfwered and faid to Da vid, I know that thou art go din my fight, as an angel of God: notwithstanding, the princes of the Philiftines have faid, He thall not go up with us to the battle. 10 Wherefore now rife up early in the morning, with my mafter's fervants that are come with thee: and as foon as ye be up early in the morning, and have light, depart.

11 So David and his men rose up early to depart in the morning, to return unto the land of the Philiftines. And the Philiftines went up to Jezreel.

CHAP. XXX.

1 The Amalekites spoil Ziklag.

David purfueth them. 265

7¶ And David faid to Abiathar the prieft, Ahimelech's fon, I pray thee, bring me hither the ephod. And Abiathar brought thi her the ephod to David.

8 And David inquired at the LORD, faying, Shall I purfue after this troop? Shall I overtake them? And he anfwered him, Purfue: for thou fhalt furely overtake them, and without fail recover all.

9 So David went, he and the fix hundred men that were with him, and came to the brook Befor, where thofe that were left behind stayed.

10 But David purfued, he and four hundred men for two hundred abode behind, which were fo faint that they could not go over the brook Befor

11 And they found an Egyptian in the field, and brought him to David, and gave him bread, and he did eat ; and they made him drink water;

12 And they gave him a piece of a cake of figs, and two clusters of raisins : and when he had eaten,his fpirit came again to him: for he had eaten no bread, nor drank any water, three days and three nights.

18 And David faid unto him, To whom belonged thou? And, Whence art thou? And he faid, I am a young man of Egypt, fervant to an Amalekite, and my mafter left me, because three days agonel fell fick.

14 We made an invafion upon the fouth of theCherethites, and upon the co ftwhich belongeth to Judah, and upon the fouth of Caleb, and we burned Ziklag with fire.

15 And David faid to him, "Canft thou bring me down to this company? And he faid, Swear unto me by God, that thou wilt neither kill me, nor deliver me înto the hands of my mafter, and I will bring thee down to this company.

7 To them which were in Bethel, and to them which were in fouth Ramoth, and to them which were in Jattir,

28 And to them which were in Aroer, and to them which were in Siphmoth, and to them which were in Efhtemoa,

29 And to them which were in Rachal, and to them which were in the cities of the Jerahmeelites, and to them which were in the cities of the Kenites,

30 And torbem which were in Hormah, and to them which were in Chorafhan, and to them which were in Athach,

5 And when his armourbearer faw that Saul was dead, he fell likewife upon his fword, and died with him.

6 So Saul died, and his three fons, and his armourbearer, and all his men, that fame day together.

7 And when the men of Ifrael that were on the other fide of the valley, and they that were on the other fide Jordan, faw that the men of Ifrael fled, and that Saul and his fons were dead, they forfook the cities, and fled; and the Philiftines canie and dwelt in them.

8 And it came to pafs on the morrow, when the Philistines came to ftrip the flain, that they found Saul and his three fons fallen in mount Gilboa.

9 And they cut of his head, and strip. ped off his armour, and fent into the land of the Philiftines round about, to publish in the house of their idols, and among the people.

10 And they put his armour in the houfe of Afhtaroth: and they taftened his body to the wall of Bethfhan.

11 And when the inhabitants of Jabethgilead heard of that which the PhiSt And to them which were in He-liftines had done to Saul;' bron, and to all the places where David himself and his men were wont to haunt. CHAP. XXXI.

1 Saul baving loft his army and bis fons, killeth bimfelf.

NOW the Philiftines fought against Ifrael; and the men of Ifrael fed from before the Philiftines, and fell down flain in mount Gilboa.

12 All the valiant men arofe, and went all night, and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his fons from the wall of Bethfhan, and came to Jabeth, and burnt them there.

18 And they took their bones, and buried them under a tree at Jabesh,and fasted feven days.

CHAP. I.

1 An Amalekite bringing tidings of the overthrow, and accufing wimfelf of Saur's death, is flain.

NOW it came to pafs after the death of Saul, when David was returned from the faughter of the the Amalekites, and David had abode two days in Ziklag ;

2 It came even to pats on the third day, that, behold, a man came out of the camp

from Saul, with his clothes rent, and earth upon his head and jo it was, when he came to David, that he fell to the earth, and did obeifance.

$ And David faid unto him, From whence comeft thou? And he faid unto him, Out of the camp of Ifrael am I escaped.

4 And David faid unto him, How went the matter? I pray thee tell me. And he lanfwered, That the people are fled from

7 And when he looked behind him, he faw me, and called unto me. And I anfwered, Here am I.

25 How are the mighty fallen in the midft of the battle? O Jonathan,ǹou waft 8 And he faid unto me, Who art thou?flain in thine high places. and I answered him, I am an Amalekite. 26 I am diftreffed for thee, my brother 9 He faid unto me again, Stand, I pray Jonathan: very pleasant has thou been thee, upon me, and flay me: for anguish unto me: thy love to me was wonderful, is come upon me, because my life is yet palling the love of women. whole in me

10 So I ftood upon him, and flew him, becaufe I was fure that he could not live, after that he was fallen and I took the Crown that was upon his head, and the bracelet that was on his arm, and have brought them hither unto my lord.

11 Then David took hold on his clothes, and rent them; and likewife all the men that were with him :

CHAP II.

David by God's direction going up 19 Hebron, is made king of Judah. 3 Abner maketh bbofheib king of Ifrael. 18 Afabel flain.

AND it came to pafs after this, that David inquired of the LORD, faying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Ju12 And they mourned and wept, and dah? And the LORD faid unto him, Go fafted until even, for Saul and for Jona-up. And David faid, Whither shall I go than his fan, and for the people of the up? And he said, Unto Hebron. LORD, and for the house of Ifrael: becaufe they were fallen by the fword.

15 And David faid unto the young man that told him, Whence art thou? And he answered, I am the son of a stranger, an Amalekite.

14 And David faid unto him, How waft thou not afraid to stretch forth thine hand to deftroy the LORD's anointed? 15 And David called one of the young men, and faid, Go near, and fall upon him. And he fmote him that he died.

16 And David faid unto him, Thy blood be upon thy head; for thy mouth hath teftified against thee, faying, I have flain the LORD's anointed.

17 And David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his fon :

2 So David went up thither, and his two wives alfo, Ahmoam the Jezreelitefs, and Abigail Nabal's wife the Carmelite. 3 And his men that were with him did David bring up, every man with his houfe. hold: and they dwelt in the cities of Hebron.

And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. And they told David, faying, That the men of Jabegilead were they that buried Saul.

5 And David fent mellengers unto the men of Jabethgilead, and faid unto them, Bletfed be ye of the LORD, that ye have thewed this kindnefs unto your lord, even unto Saul, and have buried him.

6 And now the LORD fhew kindness and truth unto you and I alfo will re18 (Alfo he bade them teach the chil-quite you this kindness, because ye have dren of Judah the use of the bow: behold, done this thing. it is written in the book of Jafher.)

19 The beauty of Ifrael is fain upon thy high places: How are the mighty fallen! 20 Tell is not in Gath, public not in the streets of Afkelon; left the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, left the daughters of the uncircumcifed triumph.

21 Ye mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew, neither let there be rain upon you, nor fields of offerings: for there the hield of the mighty is vilely caft away, the fhield of Saul, as though he bad not been anointed with oft.

7 Therefore, now let your hands be ftrengthened, and be ye valiant: for your mafter Saul is dead, and alfo the houfe of Judah have anointed me king over them.

8 But Abner the fon of Ner, captain of Saul's hoft, took Ithbotheth the fon of Saul and brought him over to Mahanaim;

9 And made hint king over Gilead, and over the Afhurites, and over Jezreel, and over Ephraim, and over Benjamin, and over all Ifrael.
