"I am the Wan, the Truth, and the Life "

[blocks in formation]

PREFACE.

In the following pages it has been attempted to present the sayings of Jesus Christ in a compact and isolated form, so that they may stand out alone, free from the interruption of the narrative portion of the Gospels. By this arrangement, it is believed, the divine words speak with new impressiveness and beauty; and thus, in a humble way, it may help to a more extended appreciation of them. When it is considered that the purport of the New Testament is the teachings of Christ, and that, whether for doctrine, for guidance, for edification, or for consolation, the words He uttered are those which most evoke the holier affections and appeal to heart and mind, the bringing together these words within a small compass, and in a shape suitable for easy reference, may prove useful as an incentive to the devout and thoughtful of all creeds.

Considerable attention has been directed to the way most likely to combine advantages of arrangement. The selections are placed in the same order as that of the gospels; those from St Matthew first, then those from St Mark, St Luke, and St John. In some cases portions of different chapters are brought together where the same theme is under treatment, so that all spoken on that subject may be seen at once. However, as the chapter and verse are indicated in the margin, the attempts at classification need cause no inconvenience. With regard to the marginal words and sentences, they are chosen principally as "catch words," to arrest the eye, and guide it instantly to the place where particular topics may be found. In some other respects, it is hoped that the manner in which the compilation is arranged will add to its usefulness.
