Do you see her, standing up motionless with stupor? Only the weak plank of a wherry between her, and the river of death; for company, only old Charon with a grey beard, skilful in handling the heavy oar, and in gathering the obolus for toll. Behind her on the shore which she quits, is seen the ghost of an old man half naked and in rags, assisting himself with difficulty by a stick, who beseeches her, one knee on the ground, to help him to place himself by her side. On the other shore, she meets with an ass loaded with wood, and its conductor both lame: vain and dangerous illusions all that. Snares laid for good faith, for the simplicity of the traveller, and at which she laughs.
