Vers ce même temps on publia un édit de César Auguste, pour faire un dénombrement des habitans de toute la terre. Et comme tous allaient se faire enregistrer chacun dans sa ville, Joseph partit aussi de la ville de Nazareth qui est en Galilée, et vint en Judée à la ville de Dávid, appelée Bethlehem, pour se faire enregistrer avec Marie son épouse.

Pendant qu'ils étaient là, il arriva que le temps auquel elle devait accoucher s'accomplit: et elle enfanta son fils premier-né et l'ayant emmaillote, elle le coucha dans une crèche; parce qu'il n'y avait point de place pour eux dans l'hôtellerie.

Or il y avait aux environs des bergers qui passaient les nuits dans les champs, veillant tour à tour à la garde de leur troupeau ; et tout d'un coup un ange du Seigneur se présenta à eux, et une lumière divine les environna; ce qui les remplit d'une extrême crainte.

Alors l'ange leur dit : Ne craignez point; car je viens vous apporter une nouvelle qui sera pour le peuple le sujet d'une grande joie ;

c'est qu'aujourd'hui dans la ville de David il vous est né un Sauveur, qui est le Christ, le Seigneur; et voici la marque à laquelle vous le reconnaîtrez : Vous trouverez un enfant emmaillotté, couché dans une crèche.

Après que les anges se furent retirés dans le ciel, bergers se dirent l'un à l'autre : Passons jusqu'à Bethlehem, et voyons ce qui est arrivé, et ce que le Seigneur nous a fait connaître.

S'étant donc bâtés d'y aller, ils trouvèrent Marie et Joseph, et l'enfant couché dans une crèche. Et l'ayant vu, ils reconnurent la vérité de ce qui leur avait été dit touchant cet enfant.

And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Cæsar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed.

And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judæa, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, to be taxed with Mary his espouse wife.

And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.

And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them and they were sore afraid.

And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made knovn unto us.

And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.

And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.
