which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance." Thus we find St. Paul addressing the Corinthians, saying, " Of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom and righteousness, and sanctification and redemption." It was for this reason Christ became Himself the Prophet, to instruct; the untiring Intercessor, to plead for; the King, to govern; the perfect pattern, to be copied by ; the Priest, to atone for all His believing people. In short He is the Alpha and Omega, the Author and Finisher of our faith; and is to us and in us our hope our only hope of glory. It was for this reason, after He had ascended up on high, that He sent the Holy Ghost, the Sanctifier, to reprove the world of sin, of righteousness and judgment; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord; to roll away the impenetrable darkness which enveloped the soul of fallen man; to new create the soul in Christ; to take of the things of Jesus and show them unto men; to restore, yea more than restore the God-like image Adam had lost through transgression, by tracing out in his soul the beauteous features of the second Adam; to carry on daily in the regenerate, the filling up this blessed out. line portraiture, by progressive sanctification of the inner man, "Till we all come in the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the

fulness of Christ." And it was for this reason He left His Testament, which is a declaration of His will; a revelation of the thoughts of the Triune-of Himself, of the Almighty Father, of the Eternal Spirit concerning the children of men; disclosing that mighty enigma, how God could be just and yet the justifier of all that believe; commanding this best of all good news for perishing man to be preached in all the world to every creature; leaving His loving prayer to the Father for His people on record in it—" Sanctify them through thy truth-thy word is truth."

Do the Romanists, and their disguised followers the Tractarians, so teach? Do they represent Jesus, and the teaching of Jesus, agreeably to and in accordance with the BIBLE, which is the perfect transcript of His own divine mind, without additions or diminution of their own?

Proceed we now to answer this question, by examining upon the following twelve heads of inquiry: firstly, our Saviour's teaching, and that from His own word-THE BIBLE; secondly, the teaching of the Romanists, and that from their own writings; thirdly, the teaching of the Tractarians, and that likewise from their own writings; and lastly, I will offer a few remarks upon each subject as it passes under our investigation.

May the Spirit of Truth be with us, guiding into

all truth, and giving us a right judgment in all things for Jesus' sake.

Our twelve inquiries will be as follows:

1. Whether Romanists and Tractarians teach, in contradistinction to the Word of God, that the Bible ought not to be freely circulated, and that it should not be received as the Rule of Faith?

2. Whether Romanists and Tractarians teach, in contradistinction to the Bible, that tradition should be received with like authority to the scriptures of truth?

3. Whether Romanists and Tractarians teach, in contradistinction to the Bible, that the clergy are to be lords over Christ's heritage, and infallible governing heads over the Church?

4. Whether Romanists and Tractarians teach, in contradistinction to the Bible, that any visible church is infallible?

5. Whether Romanists and Tractarians teach, in contradistinction to the Bible, that the supper Christ instituted was to be commemorated as a continual sacrifice to be made and offered up by priests, and that the elements of bread and wine become really and absolutely his own body and blood?

6. Whether Romanists and Tractarians teach, in contradistinction to the Bible, that the Virgin Mary is our mediator in heaven?

7. Whether Romanists and Tractarians teach, in contradistinction to the Bible, that we may worship saints, and images, and relics?

8. Whether Romanists and Tractarians teach, in contradistinction to the Bible, that a state of celibacy is more holy than that of matrimony?

9. Whether Romanists and Tractarians teach, in contradistinction to the Bible, that confession of sin should be made to the clergy, and that it is their province to give absolution and to enjoin penance?

10. Whether Romanists and Tractarians teach, in contradistinction to the Bible, that there is a purgatory?

11. Whether Romanists and Tractarians teach, in contradistinction to the Bible, that the sinner is not justified, solely by faith, in our Lord Jesus Christ?

12. Whether Romanists and Tractarians, in contradistinction to the genius of the Bible, encourage the exhibition of a bitter spirit towards our enemies, and anathematize or hate Christians who differ from themselves in their religious views?

FIRST ENQUIRY.

Does Christ, in His Word, teach, that the BIBLE ought NOT TO BE FREELY CIRCULATED, and that it should NOT BE RECEIVED AS THE RULE OF FAITH? No! For what says the Bible?

It is written:

"TO THE LAW AND TO THE TESTIMONY: IF THEY SPEAK NOT ACCORDING TO THIS WORD, IT IS BECAUSE THERE IS NO LIGHT IN THEM." (Isa. viii. 20). "SEEK YE OUT OF THE BOOK OF THE LORD, AND READ." (Isa. xxxiv. 16).

66 "YE DO ERR, NOT KNOWING THE SCRIPTURES.” (Matt. xxii. 29.)

"SEARCH THE SCRIPTURES, FOR IN THEM YE THINK

YE HAVE ETERNAL LIFE: AND THEY ARE THEY THAT

TESTIFY OF ME." (John v. 39).

"WHATSOEVER THINGS WERE WRITTEN AFORETIME WERE WRITTEN FOR OUR LEARNING, THAT WE THROUGH PATIENCE AND COMFORT OF THE SCRIPTURE MIGHT

HAVE HOPE." (Rom. xv. 4).

"AND THAT FROM A CHILD THOU HAST KNOWN THE HOLY SCRIPTURES, WHICH ARE ABLE TO MAKE THEE WISE UNTO SALVATION THROUGH FAITH WHICH IS IN

CHRIST JESUS." (2 Tim. iii. 15).

"ALL SCRIPTURE IS GIVEN BY INSPIRATION OF GOD, AND IS PROFITABLE FOR DOCTRINE, FOR REPROOF, FOR CORRECTION, FOR INSTRUCTION IN RIGHTEOUSNESS; THAT THE MAN OF GOD MAY BE PERFECT, THROUGHLY FURNISHED UNTO ALL GOOD WORKS." (2 Tim. iii. 16.)
