Oh! by Thy saving power
So make us live and die,

That we may stand in that dread hour
At Thy right hand on high!

"And there appeared uuto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them."-Acts ii. 3.

Flavian, 467.1

34 WHEN God

heaven,

C.M.

[J. KEBLE.

of old came down from

In power and wrath He came ;
Before His feet the clouds were riven,
Half darkness and half flame:

2 But when He came the second time,
He came in power and love;
Softer than gale at morning prime
Hovered His Holy Dove.

3 The fires that rushed on Sinai down
In sudden torrents dread,

Now gently light, a glorious crown,
On every sainted head.

4 And as on Israel's awe-struck ear
The voice exceeding. loud,

The trump, that angels quake to hear,
Thrilled from the deep, dark cloud;

5 So, when the Spirit of our God
Came down His flock to find,

A voice from heaven was heard abroad,
A rushing mighty wind.

6 It fills the Church of God; it fills
The sinful world around;

Only in stubborn hearts and wills
No place for it is found.

7 Come, Lord, come Wisdom, Love, and Power, Open our ears to hear;

Let us not miss th' accepted hour;
Save, Lord, by love or fear.

"The Redeemer shall come to Zion."-Isa. lix. 20.

Ephratah, 372.]

35 O COME, O come, Emmanuel,

And ransom captive Israel,
That mourns in lonely exile here,
Until the Son of God appear.
Rejoice! rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel!

20 come, Thou Rod of Jesse, free
Thine own from Satan's tyranny;
From depths of hell Thy people save,
And give them victory o'er the grave.
Rejoice! rejoice! Emmanuel

Shall come to Thee, O Israel!

3 O come, Thou Day-spring, come and cheer
Our spirits by Thine advent here;
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night,
And death's dark shadows put to flight.
Rejoice! rejoice! Emmanuel

Shall come to thee, O Israel!

4 0 come, Thou Key of David, come,
And open wide our heavenly home;
Make safe the way that leads on high,
And close the path to misery.
Rejoice! rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel!

5 0 come, O come, Thou Lord of might!
Who to Thy tribes, on Sinai's height,

In ancient times didst give the law,
In cloud, and majesty, and awe.
Rejoice! rejoice! Emmanuel

Shall come to Thee, O Israel !

"This same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen Him go into heaven."-Acts i. 11.

[c. F. ALEXANDER. HEN Jesus came to earth of old, He came in weakness and in woe;

36 WH

He wore no form of angel mould,
But took our nature poor and low.

2 But when He cometh back once more,
There shall be set the great white throne,
And earth and heaven shall flee before
The face of Him that sits thereon.

3 O Son of God, in glory crowned,
The Judge ordained of quick and dead;
O Son of Man, so pitying found
For all the tears Thy people shed,
4 Be with us in this darkened place,
This weary, restless, dangerous night;
And teach, O teach us by Thy grace,
To struggle onward into light.

5 And since in God's recording book
Our sins are written, every one,-

The crime, the wrath, the wandering look,
The good we knew, and left undone;

6 Lord, ere the last dread trump be heard,
And ere before Thy face we stand,
Look Thou on each accusing word,
And blot it with Thy bleeding hand.

7 And by the love that brought Thee here,
And by the cross, and by the grave,
Give perfect love for conscious fear,
And in the Day of Judgment save.

8 And lead us on while here we stray,
And make us love our heavenly home;
Till from our hearts we love to say,
"Even so, Lord Jesus, quickly come.'

76.76.76.76. [LAURENTIUS LAURENTI, tr.

H. L. LUTHER.

REJOICE, all ye believers,
And let your lights appear;

The evening is advancing,
And darker night is near.
The Bridegroom is arising,
And soon He draweth nigh;
Up! pray, and watch, and wrestle,
At midnight comes the cry!

2 See that your lamps are burning,
Replenish them with oil,
And wait for your salvation,
The end of earthly toil.
The watchers on the, mountain
Proclaim the Bridegroom near,

Go, meet Him as He cometh
With hallelujahs clear.

3 Ye saints, who here in patience
Your cross and sufferings bore,
Shall live and reign for ever,
When sorrow is no more.

Around the throne of glory,
The Lamb ye shall behold,
In triumph cast before Him
Your diadems of gold.

4 Our hope and expectation,
O Jesus! now appear;
Arise, thou Sun so longed for,
O'er this benighted sphere!
With hearts and hands uplifted,
We plead, O Lord, to see
The day of earth's redemption,
That brings us unto Thee!

“Behold, the Bridegroom cometh.”—Matt. xxv. 6. Dumah, 32.] 888.664.88. [NICOLAI, tr. by G. BARTHOLOMEW. LEEPERS, wake! a voice is calling; It is the Watchman on the walls, Thou city of Jerusalem!

Arise, and take your lamps.
Hallelujah!

Awake! His kingdom is at hand!
Go forth, go forth to meet your Lord!

39 WAKE, awake, for night is flying,

The watchmen on the heights are
Awake, Jerusalem, at last! [crying';
Midnight hears the welcome voices,
And at the thrilling cry rejoices:
Come forth, ye virgins, night is past!
The Bridegroom comes, awake,
Your lamps with gladness take:
Hallelujah!
