Till we raise
Hymns of praise,

Beyond mortal telling,
In the Eternal temple!

"Make His praise glorious."-Ps. lxvi. 2.

Sheba, 394.]

11.11.11.11. [LADY M. C. CAMPBELL.

241 PRAISE ye Jehovah, praise the Lord

most holy,

Who cheers the contrite, girds with strength the weak;

Praise Him who will with glory crown the lowly,

And with salvation beautify the meek.

2 Praise ye the Lord for all His loving-kindness, And all the tender mercy He hath shown; Praise Him who pardons all our sin and blindness,

And calls us sons, and marks us for His

own.

3 Praise ye Jehovah, source of all our blessing, Before His gifts earth's richest boons are dim; Resting in Him, His peace and joy possessing, All things are ours, for we have all in Him.

4 Praise ye the Father, God the Lord, who gave us,

With full and perfect love, His only Son; Praise ye the Son, who died Himself

save us;

Praise ye the Spirit, praise the Three in One.

"Shout unto God with the voice of triumph." --Ps. xlvii. 1. Wittemberg 89.] 67.67.66.66. [RINCKART, tr. by C. WINKWORTH OW thank we all our God,

242

NOW
With heart, and hands, and voices,
Who wondrous things hath done,

In whom His world rejoices;
Who from our mothers' arms
Hath blessed us on our way
With countless gifts of love,
And still is ours to-day.

2 Oh may this bounteous God
Through all our life be near us,
With ever joyful hearts

And blessed peace to cheer us;
And keep us in His grace,
And guide us when perplex'd,
And free us from all ills

In this world and the next.

3 All praise and thanks to God
The Father, now be given,
The Son, and Him who reigns
With them in highest heaven ;
The One eternal God,

Whom earth and heaven adore,
For thus it was, is now,

And shall be evermore.

"Glory to God in the highest."—Luke ii. 14.

Seraphim, 448.] 10 9.10 9.10 10 8.10 10 8. [w. TIDD MATSON

LORY, glory to God in the Highest! 243 Angels in chorus joyfully cry; GLO Glory, glory to God in the Highest! Trembling and weak our voices reply.

Fain would we echo their anthem above,
Fain would we sing to the Fountain of love.
Glory to God in the Highest !

What though but feebly our accents arise,
Deigning to hearken, He bends from the skies,
Glory to God in the Highest!

2 Glory, glory to God in the Highest! Bright-beaming stars of midnight proclaim; Glory, glory to God in the Highest!

All nature peals forth in praise to His name,
Warbles the woodland, and whispers the breeze,
Roar out the torrents and tempest-toss'd seas,
Glory to God in the Highest !

Loud His creation still ceaseless prolongs,
Praise to her Maker in all her glad songs,
Glory to God in the Highest!

3 Glory, glory to God in the Highest!
Joining the choir, our tribute we bring;
Glory, glory to God in the Highest!
Mortals break silence, gratefully sing;
Reigning in majesty, throned above,
Yours is the royalest gift of His love.
Glory to God in the Highest!

Spread through creation, His grandeur we trace,
Only in man He revealeth His grace,
Glory to God in the Highest!

244 PRAISE to the Holiest in the height,

And in the depth_be_praise;

In all His words most wonderful,
Most sure in all His ways!

T

2 Oh, loving wisdom of our God!
When all was sin and shame,
A second Adam to the fight,
And to the rescue came.

3 Oh, wisest love! that flesh and blood,
Which did in Adam fail,

Should strive afresh against their foe,
Should strive, and should prevail !
4 And that a higher gift than grace
Should flesh and blood refine,
God's presence, and His very Self,
And essence all-Divine!

5 Oh, generous love! that He, who smote
In man for man the foe,
The double agony in man

For man should undergo;
6 And in the garden secretly,
And on the Cross on high,

Should teach His brethren and inspire
To suffer and to die!

7 Praise to the Holiest in the height,
And in the depth be praise;

In all His words most wonderful,
Most sure in all His ways!

The Lord Jesus Christ.

HIS ADVENT.

"Unto us a Child is born."-Isa. ix. 6.

Altorf, 382.] 8.3.3.6. [GERHARDT, tr. by c. WINKWORTH,

245 ALL my heart this night rejoices,

As I hear, far and near,

Sweetest angel voices;

"Christ is born!" their choirs are singing,
Till the air, everywhere
Now with joy is ringing.

2 For it dawns, the promised morrow
Of His birth, who the earth
Rescues from her sorrow.
God to wear our form descendeth ;
Of His grace to our race,

Here His Son He lendeth.

3 Hark! a voice from yonder manger,
Soft and sweet, doth entreat―
"Flee from woe and danger;

Brethren, come; from all that grieves you
You are freed; all you need
Here your Saviour gives you."

4 Come then, let us hasten yonder;
Here let all, great and small,

Kneel in awe and wonder.

Love Him who with love is yearning;
Hail the Star, that from far
Bright with hope is burning.

"I heard the voice of many angels."-Rev. v. 11.

Noel, 431.]

[blocks in formation]

T came upon the midnight clear—
That glorious song of old,

From angels bending near the earth.
To touch their harps of gold:
"Peace on the earth, good-will to men
From Heaven's all-gracious King!"--

The world in solemn stillness lay
To hear the angels sing.
