The church has a new organist, also, Elwood Gaskill, formerly an associate of Dr Carl McKinley at Old South Church, and before that at First Church and King's Chapel. Under his direction the choir sang anthems by Bach and Cesar Franck, and he himself played music by Marcello, Corejli, and Boellman. In the calendar Mr Greeley announced that his office hours at the church will be from 11 a m until 1 p m except on Mondays, and at other times by appointment.

His first sermon yesterday morning was a strong statement of his beliefs on the place which religion and the church occupy in life.

"It is for us," he said, "with humility and devotion, to give of ourselves for the continuation and the improvement of this church, which in the bearing of good fruit has been surpassed by none in the length and breadth of our land. It is for us so to promote this institution that for years to come it shall stand before men as a symbol of light and of power and of fellowship.

"We hear so much in these days," Mr Greeley said, "of the repetition of the motto that "religion is the opiate of the people," propounded in Russia by a nation that has rebelled not against religion but against a domineering ecclesiasticism and an unbearable oppression, not against the life of the spirit but against certain hollow and corrupt forms from which
