THE RELIGIOUS QUESTIONS OF THE AGE.*

THE course of events in the theological world of Germany, during the last fifty or sixty years, is a very instructive chapter in the history of Christian doctrines. The entire range of evangelical truth has undergone the most searching scrutiny. Every available point of attack has been vigilantly occupied by the enemies of the truth. During the former part of the period, the attack was led by men who had no apprehension of the peculiar beauties of the Christian scheme, so that, in submitting it to their rude tests, they dissipated all its fragrance and essence, and retained nothing but the grosser portions. Now, the danger threatened is of an opposite kind. The philosophers of the day are inclined to transmute the Christianity of the Bible; and, after passing through their alembic, it comes out too ethereal and vapoury to serve the purposes for which the Christian faith is given, as 'the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.'
