With every expression of respect and affection, (1.) To the Compiler's beloved Mother, to whom, as also to his late revered Father, for nearly forty years Minister of the Parish of Glasford, he owes, under God, much of whatever success he may have had in his own Ministry, and in his dealings with his fellow men. (2.) To the Rev. J. R. Macduff, D.D., late of the Parish of Sandyford, Glasgow, and Author of very many well known and abundantly blessed Works, under whom, as his Parochial Assistant, the Compiler began his Ministry and acquired his first ministerial training, and to whom he is indebted for much ever-wise Fatherly counsel and the privilege of a warm, unvarying, and constant friendship. (3.) To the Compiler's present Colleagues and Parishioners of Inverness, as also the Parishioners of the other Charges he has previously respectively filled, viz., the Parish of Fyvie. Aberdeenshire; the Parish of Glasford, Lanarkshire; and St Andrew's Church, Montreal, Canada, the exceeding love and loyalty received from whom he will hold "in everlasting remembrance," and for whose prosperity and peace he will "pray without ceasing." PREFATORY NOTE. THE title-page of this unpretending little volume explains the purpose of its publication. No originality can or need be claimed for any portion of it. There is not a word in the narrative it embodies which is not in the sacred text of the New Testament; and, while simpler in arrangement and more easily understood, it proceeds upon lines and a principle already laid down in more than one Harmony of the Gospels. The Compiler has been, during his now nearly twenty years' ministry, in the habit of using, in the course of pulpit preparation and teaching, several works having the same general object in view as this, but he has long felt that it was a great drawback to the usefulness of these that the ordinary reader should be obliged to feel his way, so to speak to pick his steps, through an involved labyrinth of parallel passages from all the four Evangelists before being able to make up and put together a chronologically complete and closely connected record, instead of that being presented, as has been attempted in the following pages, in one flowing and continuous story. Such as it is, this compilation, whatever may be its defects or merits, goes forth with the sincere desire and hope that it may be found helpful to many in the perusal and study of THE LIFE OF LIVES.
