PART III.

GOD AS THE EFFICIENT CAUSE OF ALL THINGS;
AND ON HIS PRINCIPAL WORKS.

GOD, Who, from eternity, had reposed in the contem-
plation of His Infinite Perfection, decided, not from
exigence, but for the communication of His fulness, to
produce creatures in time. "Such is His Goodness,"
says Peter the Lombard, "that He wished to make
others share in that Beatitude by which He is eternally
happy, and which He saw could be communicated with-
out being diminished." "In the production of crea-
tures," says S. Thomas,† "nothing moves God save His
Goodness alone, which He wished to communicate to
other things by making them like to Himself." God's
creatures are (1) Purely spiritual; Angels. (2) Partly
spiritual, partly corporeal; men. (3) Purely corporeal.
