ABOUT one half of the following essays are, in part, reproductions of articles which have already appeared in different reviews. The third, fourth and fifth papers are reprinted from the Westminster Review, the seventh, eighth and tenth from the Fortnightly Review, and the ninth from the Contemporary Review. In nearly every case considerable alterations and additions have been made, and three of the essays at least (those on Belief, the Free-will Doctrine, and Musical Form) may be regarded as new contributions. The remaining chapters of the volume have not been previously published. The author would tender his best thanks to Professor Bain and to Mr. Herbert Spencer for their kindness in giving him fuller explanations of their published views.
