THE SECOND EPISTLE OF PAUL THE APOSTLE

PAUL

ΤΟ

TIMOTHY.

CHAPTER I. AUL, an apostle of 1Christ Jesus by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus,

2 To Timothy, my beloved child: Grace, mercy, peace, from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

3 I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers in pure conscience, how unceasingly I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day;

4 Longing to see thee, being mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled with joy;

5 Calling to remembrance the unfeigned faith that was in thee, such as dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother 2Eunice ; but I am persuaded that also in thee.

6 For which cause I put thee in mind to stir up the gift of God, which is in thee through the laying on of my hands.

1 So the oldest MSS.
2 Pronounce Eunícé.

7 For God gave us not the spirit of cowardice; but of power, and of love, and of correction.

8 Be not thou ashamed therefore of the testimony of our Lord, nor yet of me his prisoner: but rather suffer afflictions with me for the gospel according to the power of God;

9 Who saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and the grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before eternal times,

IO But hath now been made

manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who abolished death, but brought life and incorruption to light through the gospel :

II For which I was appointed an herald, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles.

12 For which cause I also suffer these things nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I

:

know whom I have trusted, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

13 Take an example of the sound words, which thou heardest from me in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.

14 The goodly trust committed unto thee keep through the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in

us.

15 Thou knowest this, that all they which are in Asia turned away from me; of whom are 'Phygelus and Hermogenes.

16 The Lord give mercy unto the house of Onesiphorus, because he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain: 17 Nay, when he came to Rome, he sought me out the more diligently, and found me. 18 The Lord grant unto him that he may find mercy of the Lord in that day: and in how many things he ministered at Ephesus, thou knowest better than I.

CHAPTER II.

TH HOU therefore, my child, be strengthened in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

2 And the things that thou heardest from me among many witnesses, these commit thou to faithful men, such as shall be able to teach them to others also.

3 Suffer afflictions with me as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.

4 No man serving as a soldier entangleth himself with the affairs of life; that he may please him who chose him to be a soldier.

5 And if a man also strive in the games, he is not crowned, except he strive according to the rules.

6 The labouring husbandman ought to partake first of the fruits.

7 Understand what I say; for the Lord shall give thee clear apprehension in all things.

8 Keep in remembrance Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, of the seed of David, according to my gospel,

9 In which I suffer trouble, even unto bonds as an evil doer; but the word of God hath not been bound.

IO For this cause I endure all things for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.

II Faithful is the saying: For if we died with him, we shall also live with him:

12 If we endure, we shall also reign with him if we shall deny him, he also will deny us :

13 If we disbelieve, yet he remaineth faithful: for he cannot deny himself.

14 Of these things put them in remembrance, adjuring them before the Lord not to strive

:

17 And their word will eat as doth a cancer: of whom is Hymenæus and Philetus;

18 Who concerning the truth went astray, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of

some.

19 Nevertheless the firm foundation of God standeth, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his: and, Let every one that nameth the name of 'the Lord depart from iniquity.

20 But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour.

21 If then a man shall purify himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, meet for the master's use, prepared unto every good

work.

22 But flee youthful lusts: and follow after righteousness, faith, love, 2peace with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

23 But foolish and irregular questions decline, knowing that they gender strifes.

24 And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be

26 And that they may return to soberness out of the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him in pursuance of God's will.

CHAPTER III.

OUT know this, that in the last days grievous times shall come.

2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, lovers of money, boasters, haughty, evil speakers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,

3 Without natural affection, implacable, slanderers, incontinent, fierce, haters of good, 4 Traitors, headlong, besotted with pride, lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God;

5 Having an outward form of godliness, but having denied the power thereof: from these also turn away.

6 For of these are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts,

7 Ever learning, and never yet able to come to the full knowledge of the truth.

8 Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also withstand the truth: men corrupted in their minds, reprobate concerning the faith.

9 Notwithstanding, they shall proceed no further: for their

folly shall be fully manifest | quick and the dead, 3and by unto all, as theirs also was. his appearing and his kingdom;

10 But thou wert a follower of my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, love, patience,

II Persecutions, sufferings, such as happened unto me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; such persecutions as I endured and out of all the Lord delivered me.

12 Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.

13 But evil men and impostors shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.

14 But continue thou in the things which thou learnedst and wert assured of, knowing from what teachers thou didst learn them;

15 And that from a child thou knowest the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

16 Every scripture inspired by God is also profitable for doctrine, for conviction, for correction, for discipline which is in righteousness:

17 That the man of God may be complete, throughly furnished unto every good work.

2 Preach the word; be urgent in season, out of season; convict, rebuke, exhort in all longsuffering and teaching.

3 For the time will come when they will not endure the sound doctrine; but after their own lusts they shall heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;

4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall turn aside unto fables.

5 But be thou sober in all things, suffer affliction, do the work of an evangelist, fulfil thy ministry.

6 For I am already being poured out, and the time of my departure is at hand.

7 I have striven the good strife, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:

8 Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall award me at that day: and not only to me, but unto all them also that have loved his appearing. 9 Do thy diligence to come shortly unto me:
