THE SADDUCEES CONFUTED.

MARK XII.-28 And one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first com. mandment of all? 29 And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hèar, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord: 30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heàrt, and with all thy sòul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength? this is the first commandment. 31 And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: there is none other commandment greater than these. 32 And the scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth; for there is one God; and there is none other but he : 33 And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and love his neighbour as hímself, is more than all whole burntófferings and sacrifices. 34 And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no man after that durst ask him any question.

41 And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in mùch. 42 And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing. 43 And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily, I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury. 33 For all they did cast in of their abùndance: but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living.

THE BIRTH OF CHRIST.

LUKE II.- -8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And lo, the angel of the Lòrd came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them; and

they were sore afraid. 10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not for behold, I bring you good tìdings of great joy, which shall be to all people. 11 For unto you is born this day, in the city of David, a Sàviour, which is Christ the Lord. 12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling-clothes, lying in a mangèr. 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, 14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward mèn. 15 And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. 16 And they came with hàste, and found Mary and Joséph, and the babe lying in a manger. 17 And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. 18 And all they that heard it, wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds. 19 But Măry kept all these things, and pondered, them in her heart. 20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

LUKE II.-40 And the child gréw, and waxed strong in spírit, filled with wisdom; and the grace of God was upon him. 41 Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover. 42 And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast. 43 And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it. 44 But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day's journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance. 45 And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seèking him. 46 And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them quèstions. 47 And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers. And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Són, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing. 49

And he said unto them, How is it that ye soùght me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business? 50 And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them.

JOHN'S PREACHING AND BAPTISM.

LUKE III-1 Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Cesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene, 2 Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness. 3 And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance, for the remission of sins; 4 As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. 5 Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth; 6 And all flesh shall see the salvation of God. 7 Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vìpers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to còme? 8 Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. 9 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit, is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 10 And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then? 11 He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do lìkewise. 12 Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Máster, what shall we do? 13 And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you. 14 And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do vio

lence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be con tent with your wages. 15 And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not; 16 John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I còmeth, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: 17 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.

CHRIST'S TEMPTATION.

LUKE IV.-16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath-day, and stood up for to read. 17 And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, 18 The Spirit of the Lòrd is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the broken-hearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are brùised, 19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. 20 And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21 And he began to say unto them, This day is the scripture fulfilled in your ears. 22 And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph's són? 23 And he said unto them, Ye will surely say unto me this proverb, Physician, heal thyself: whatsoever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country. 24 And he said, Verily, I say unto you, No prophet is accepted in his own country. 25 But I tell you of a truth, many wìdows were in Israel in the days of Elias, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land. 26 But unto none of them was Elias sent, save unto Sarèp

ta, a city of Sidon, unto a woman that was a widow. 27 And many lèpers were in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, saving Naàman the Syrian. 28 And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wràth, 29 And rose up, and thrust him out of the cìty, and led him unto the brow of the hill, (whereon their city was built,) that they might cast him down headlong. 30 But he, passing through the midst of them, went his way.

40 Now, when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases, brought them unto him: and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them. 41 And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ the son of God. And he, rebuking them, suffered them not to speak; for they knew that he was Christ. 42 And when it was day, he departed, and went into a desert place; and the people sought him, and came unto him, and stayed him, that he should not depart from them. 43 And he said unto them, I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also, for therefore am I sènt. 44 And he preached in the synagogues of Galilee.

THE DRAUGHT OF FISHES.

LUKE V.-1 And it came to pass, that as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret, 2 And saw two ships standing by the lake; but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets. 3 And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon's, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship. 4 Now, when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. 5 And Simon answering, said unto him, Máster, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing; nevertheless, at thy word I will let down the nèt. 6 And when they had this done, they enclosed a great multitude of fishes and their net brake. 7 And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they
