tations; and I appoint unto29 you a kingdom, even as my Father appointed unto me, thatз0 ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom; and ye shall sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. (8138 N) And he said 29 unto them, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or wife, or brethren, or parents, or children, for the kingdom of God's sake, who shall not receive30 manifold more in this time, and in the 4world to come eternal life.

§ 118 PARABLE OF THE HOUSEHOLDER AND THE LABOURERS

MATT 20:1-16

For the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is a householder, which went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard. And when he had agreed with the 2 labourers for a spenny a day, he sent them into his vineyard. And he went out about 3 the third hour, and saw others standing in the marketplace idle; and to them he said, Go ye 4 also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right I will give you. And they went their way. Again he went out about the sixth and the 5 ninth hour, and did likewise. And about the 6 eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing; and he saith unto them, Why stand ye here all the day idle? They say unto him, 7 Because no man hath hired us. He saith unto them, Go ye also into the vineyard. And when even was come, the lord of the vineyard saith unto his steward, Call the labourers, and pay them their hire, beginning from the last unto the first. And when they came that were 9 hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a spenny. And when the first came,10 they supposed that they would receive more; and they likewise received every man a 5penny. And when they received it, they murmured11 against the householder, saying, These last12 have spent but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden of the day and the 'scorching heat. But he13 answered and said to one of them, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst not thou agree with me for a spenny? Take up that which is thine,14 and go thy way; it is my will to give unto this

when the ten heard it, they began to be moved with indignation concerning James and John.

And Jesus called42 them to him, and saith unto them, Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles lord it over them; and their great ones exercise authority over them. JJ But it is not so among you:43 but whosoever would become great among you, shall be your minister: and whoso-44 ever would be first among you, shall be servant of all. K For verily the Son of man45 came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

§ 122 THE RICH PUBLICAN OF JERICHO

[merged small][ocr errors]

LUKE 19:1-10

And he entered and was passing through I Jericho. And behold, a man called by name 2 Zacchæus; and he was a chief publican, and he was rich. And he sought to see Jesus who he 3 was; and could not for the crowd, because he was little of stature. And he ran on before, 4 and climbed up into a sycomore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way. And when Jesus 5 came to the place, he looked up, and said unto him, Zacchæus, make haste, and come down; for to-day I must abide at thy house. And 6 he made haste, and came down, and received him joyfully. And when they saw it, they all 7 murmured, saying, He is gone in to lodge with a man that is a sinner. And Zacchæus stood, and said unto the Lord, Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have wrongfully exacted aught of any man, I restore fourfold. And Jesus said unto him, To-day is 9

And he also that22 received the two talents came and said, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me two talents: lo, I have gained other two talents. I

But his lord an-26 swered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I did not scatter; thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the27 bankers, and at my coming I should have received

LUKE 19:11-28

A And as they heard these things, he added11 and spake a parable, because he was nigh to Jerusalem, and because they supposed that the kingdom of God was immediately to appear. B He said therefore, A certain nobleman went12 into a far country, to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return. And he called ten 'serv-13 ants of his, and gave them ten pounds, and said unto them, Trade ye herewith till I corne.

C

But14 his citizens hated him, and sent an ambassage after him, saying, We will not that this man reign over us.

E

And it came to pass, when he15 was come back again, having received the kingdom, that he commanded these 'servants, unto whom he had given the money, to be called to him, that he might know what they had gained by trading.

F

And the first came before him, 16 saying, Lord, thy pound hath made ten pounds more. And he said unto him, Well done, thou17 good 3servant: because thou wast found faithful in a very little, have thou authority over ten cities.

G And the second came, saying, Thy18 pound, Lord, hath made five pounds. And he19 said unto him also, Be thou also over five cities.

H And another came, saying, Lord, behold, 20 here is thy pound, which I kept laid up in a napkin: for feared thee, because thou art an21 austere man: thou takest up that thou layedst not down, and reapest that thou didst not sow.

I He saith unto him, Out of thine own mouth 22 will I judge thee, thou wicked 3servant. Thou knewest that I am an austere man, taking up that I laid not down, and reaping that I did not sow; then wherefore gavest thou not my23 money into the bank, and 5I at my coming
