§ 85 ELEMENTS OF PREVAILING PRAYER MATTHEW

B After this manner therefore pray ye: Our 6: Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy 9 name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will belo done, as in heaven, so on earth. Give us this1I day our daily bread. And forgive us our12 debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And13 bring us not into temptation, but deliver us from 5the evil one." (§37 W)

7:

D Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto 7 you: for every one that asketh receiveth; and he 8 that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. Or what man is there of you, 9 who, if his son shall ask him for a loaf, will give him a stone; or if he shall ask for a fish,10 will give him a serpent? If ye then, being evil,11 know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him? (838 K)

said unto them, When ye pray, say, 'Father, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come." Give us day by day 3our daily bread. And 3 forgive us our sins; for we ourselves also for- 4 give every one that is indebted to us. And bring us not into temptation.4

c And he said unto them, Which of you shall 5 have a friend, and shall go unto him at midnight, and say to him, Friend, lend me three loaves; for a friend of mine is come to me from 6 a journey, and I have nothing to set before him; and he from within shall answer and say, 7 Trouble me not: the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give thee? I say unto you, Though he will 8 not rise and give him, because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will arise and give him as many as he needeth.

And I say?

unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. For every one that asketh re-10 ceiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. Andi of which of you that is a father shall his son ask a loaf, and he give him a stone? or a fish, and he for a fish give him a serpent? Or if he12 shall ask an egg, will he give him a scorpion? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good13 gifts unto your children, how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

MATT 12

EE And knowing their thoughts he said25 unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand: and if26 Satan casteth out Satan, he is divided against himself; how then shall his kingdom stand?

F And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, 3by27 whom do your sons cast them out? therefore shall they be your judges. But if I 3by the Spirit of28 God cast out 'devils, then is the kingdom of God come upon you. § 90 DISCOURSE ON THE SCRIBES AND PHARISEES

MATTHEW 23 Compare §63 portions ABC

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypo-25 crites! for ye cleanse the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full from extortion and excess. Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first26 the inside of the cup and of the platter, that the outside thereof may become clean also. (§132 M)

C

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypo-23 crites! for ye tithe mint and 3anise and cummin, and have left undone the weightier matters of the law, judgement, and mercy, and faith: but these ye ought to have done, and not to have left the other undone. Ye blind guides, which strain out the24 gnat, and swallow the camel. (8132 L)

DD But all their works they do for to be seen of 5 men: for they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments, and love 6 the chief place at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues, and the salutations in the market- 7 places, and to be called of men, Rabbi. (§132 D) E Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypo-27 crites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which outwardly appear beautiful, but inwardly are full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness. Even so ye also outwardly appear right-28 eous unto men, but inwardly ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity. (§132 N)

G Yea, they bind heavy burdens and grievous 4 to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with their finger. (8132C)

MATT 23

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypo-29 crites! for ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and garnish the tombs of the righteous, and say,30 If we had been in the days of our fathers, we should not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets. Wherefore ye witness toз1 yourselves, that ye are sons of them that slew the prophets. (81320)
