CHRONOLOGICAL TABLE AND CONTENTS.
[IN spite of the regular and minute references given in both narratives,
the chronology is full of difficulties. The references themselves are at
times contradictory, and the number of years allotted to the kings of Judah,
between the Revolt of Israel and the Fall of Samaria, considerably exceeds
the number given to the kings of Israel. There is thus, apart from other
difficulties, obviously room for correction. The Monuments of Assyria
furnish a certain number of fixed points, but the materials for a complete
revision are not yet in our hands. The dates in the following Table are
in the main those given in Riehm's "Handwörterbuch," and quoted in
Smith's “Dictionary of the Bible." The figures in small type are merely
inserted as guides. They must not be read as dates of the events which
may happen to be placed opposite to them in the table of contents.
I am
indebted to Professor George Adam Smith for his advice, and for several
improvements in the Table.]
