Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1863, by

GEORGE P. PUTNAM,

in the Clerk's Office of the District Court for the Southern District of New York.

RIVERSIDE, CAMBRIDGE:

STEREOTYPED AND PRINTED BY H. O. HOUGHTON.

NOTE.

THE purpose of this collection is to preserve some of the best specimens of the Lyrical Writings which the present Rebellion has called forth. The limited space afforded by a single volume has compelled the editor to enlarge the work by adding a Second and a Third Series, which will be issued at an early day. The Second Series will embrace the Songs of the Soldiers, and Ballads of the Rebellion; while the Personal and Political epics and rhymes, which have been produced on the Rebel as well as National side of the contest, will be given in the Third Series.

NEW YORK, December, 1863.
