of the twain will ye that I release unto you? They said, Barabbas. Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus, which is called 22 Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be crucified. And the governor 23 said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified. When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, 24 but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it. Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be 25 on us and on our children. Then released he Barabbas unto them: and 26 when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.

THEN the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, 27 and gathered unto him the whole band of soldiers: and they stripped 28 him, and put on him a scarlet robe: and when they had platted a crown 29 of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand; and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews! And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him 30 on the head. And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off 31 from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him.

And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots, 35 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet: "They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots." And 36 sitting down, they watched him there : and set over his head his accusation 37 written, "THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS." Then were there two 38 thieves crucified with him; one on the right hand, and another on the left.

If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him. He trusted in God; let him de- 43 liver him now, if he will have him! for he said, I am the Son of God. The 44 thieves also which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth. Now, from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the 45 ninth hour. And about the ninth hour, Jesus cried with a loud voice, 46 saying, "Eli! Eli! lama sabachthani!" (that is to say, " My God! my God! why hast thou forsaken me?") Some of them that stood there, 47 when they heard that, said, This man calleth for Elias. And straightway 48 one of them ran, and took a sponge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink. The rest said, Let be, let us see whether 49 Elias will come to save him.

Pilate said unto 65 them, Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can. So they 66 went and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch. was a great earthquake: for the angel of the LORD descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it. His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow. 3 And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men. 4 And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I 5 know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. He is not here: for he 6 is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. And go 7 quickly, and tell his disciples, that he is risen from the dead, and behold, he goeth before you into Galilee: there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you. And they departed quickly from the sepulchre, with fear and great 8 joy: and did run to bring his disciples word. And as they went to tell 9 his disciples, behold Jesus met them, saying, All hail! And they came, and held him by the feet, and worshipped him. Then said Jesus unto 10 them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren, that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me.

The guard bribed. Now, when they were going, behold some of the watch 11 came into the city, and showed unto the chief priests all the things that were done. And when they were assembled with the elders, and had 12 taken counsel, they gave large money unto the soldiers, saying, Say ye, 13 His disciples came by night, and stole him away while we slept. And if 14 this come to the governor's ears, we will persuade him, and secure you. So they took the money, and did as they were taught: and this saying 15 is commonly reported among the Jews until this day.

THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO

MARK.

THE beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

Of John the Forerunner of Christ.

John did 4 baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. And there went out unto him all the land of Judea, 5 and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins. And John was clothed with camel's hair, and with 6 a girdle of a skin about his loins; and he did eat locusts and wild honey; ' and preached, saying, There cometh one mightier than I after me, the 7 latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose. I 8 indeed have baptized you with water; but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.

Jesus baptized.

AND it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came 9 Matt. iii. 13. Luke from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in iii. 21. Jordan. And straightway coming up out of the water, he 10 saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him. And there came a voice from heaven, saying, 'Thou art my beloved Son, 11 in whom I am well pleased.'

NOW, after that John was put in prison, Jesus came 14 Galilee. Matt. iv. 12. into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, Luke iv. 14, 15. ' and saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of 15 God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.

And when he had gone 19 a little further thence, he saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the ship mending their nets. And straightway 20 he called them and they left their father Zebedee in the ship with the hired servants, and went after him.

And there was in 23 their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out, ' saying, 24 Let us alone! what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God. And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out 25 of him. And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a 26 loud voice, he came out of him. And they were all amazed, insomuch 27 that they questioned among themselves, saying, What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him. And immediately his fame spread abroad 28 throughout all the region round about Galilee.

And in the morning, 35 rising up a great while before day, he went out and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed. And Simon, and they that were with him, 36 followed after him. And when they had found him, they said unto him, 37 All men seek for thee. And he said unto them, Let us go into the next 38 towns, that I may preach there also: for therefore came I forth. And 39 he preached in their synagogues throughout all Galilee, and cast out devils.

And there came a leper to him, beseeching him, and 40 Matt. viii. 1. Luke kneeling down to him, and saying unto him, If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. And Jesus, moved with com-41 passion, put forth his hand, and touched him, and saith unto him, I will; be thou clean. And as soon as he had spoken, immediately the leprosy 42 departed from him, and he was cleansed. And he straightly charged him, 43 and forthwith sent him away; and saith unto him, See thou say nothing 44 to any man; but go thy way, show thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing those things which Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them. But he went out, and began to publish it much, and to blaze 45 abroad the matter, insomuch that Jesus could no more openly enter into the city, but was without in desert places: and they came to him from every quarter.

And 4 when they could not come nigh unto him for the press, they uncovered the roof where he was: and when they had broken it up, they let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay. When Jesus saw their faith, 5 he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee. But. 6 there were certain of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts; Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive 7 sins but God only? And immediately, when Jesus perceived in his spirit 8 that they so reasoned within themselves, he said unto them, Why reason ye these things in your hearts? Whether is it easier to say to the sick of 9 the palsy, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and take up thy bed, and walk? But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power 10 on earth to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,) 'I say unto 11 thee, Arise, and take up thy bed, and go thy way into thy house. And 12 immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went forth before them all;

And when the 16 scribes and Pharisees saw him eat with publicans and sinners, they said unto his disciples, How is it that he eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners?
