J.-C. DESCENDU DE LA CROIX.

Tandis que Nicodème et Joseph d'Arimathie, placés sur des échelles, soutiennent le corps de Jésus-Christ, dont la main gauche est encore attachée à la croix, saint Jean soutient les pieds du Sauveur, et la Vierge évanouie est secourue par les saintes femmes que nous avons déjà eu occasion de nommer en parlant d'un tableau du Poussin, no. 46. Le religieux que l'on voit debout à droite est saint Bernardin, introduit dans cette composition parce que ce tableau a été peint pour orner une chapelle sous son invocation, dans l'église de Saint-Laurent à Pérouse.

Ce tableau, regardé comme l'un des plus beaux ouvrages du peintre Frédéric Baroche, a été peint en 1569; on l'a vu pendant quelques années dans la galerie du Louvre à Paris; mais, ainsi que d'autres chefs-d'œuvre, il a été repris en 1815, et est retourné en Italie. Des restaurations maladroites ont causé quelques dégradations à ce tableau. Il a été gravé en 1606, par François Villamene, et depuis par Dominique Falcino.

Whilst Nicodemus, and Joseph of Arimathea, placed on ladders, are sustaining the body of Christ, whose left hand is still fastened to the cross, Saint John bears up the feet of the Saviour, and the Virgin having fainted, is aided by holy women whom we have already mentioned in speaking of Poussin's picture, no. 46. The Monk seen standing up on the right is Saint Bernardin, introduced into this composition, because this picture was painted to ornament the chapel under his protection, in the church of Saint Laurent at

Perouse.

This painting considered one of the finest works of this artist, was executed in 1569 it was exhibited for some years in the Gallery of the Louvre at Paris, but like many other masterpieces, was taken away, and has returned to Italy in 1815; certain ill done reparations have diminished the value of this picture, which has been engraved in 1606, by François Villamene and since by Dominique Falcino.
