5s. "Told with the most entertaining extravagance, the gayest good-temper, and pleasant satire. It is pleasant to read something about Japan that is not eulogy -to find one traveller, at least, who does not like paper screens for partition walls, and has a prejudice in favor of comfort and substantial things."-Boston Advertiser.

"It is peculiarly valuable for the insight it gives one into the every-day manners and customs of the Japanese.”—N. Y. Examiner.

Perkins. France under Mazarin. With a Sketch of the Administration of Richelieu. By JAMES PERKINS. Third edition. Two volumes, large octavo, with portraits of Mazarin, Richelieu, Louis XIII., and Condé

16s.

"The period covered by the administration of Richelieu and Mazarin is one of both interest and importance. Yet I am not aware that any full history of this time has been written in English. The career and character of Richelieu are, to a certain extent, familiar; but perhaps most have a general idea of his administration, rather than a familiarity with what he actually did. Both the character and administration of Mazarin are, I think, little known to most English readers. Yet the eighteen years which embraced the Fronde and the treaties of Westphalia and the Pyrenees cannot be deemed unimportant.”— Extract from Author's Preface.

“The author has been happily inspired in his choice of subjects, and he has devoted to its thorough elucidation, not only literary faculties of a praiseworthy kind, but an unusual amount of research among materials unpublished, or at all events unknown to American or English readers."—N. Y. Sun,

Richardson. American Literature, 1607-1885. By CHARLES F. RICHARDSON, Professor of English Literature in Dartmouth College. Part I. (Complete in itself.)- The Development of American Thought. Octavo, half leather. [25.

This volume traces the progress of American prose literature from its humblest beginnings to the present time, in its various departments of history, politics, theology, philosophy, the essay, criticism, science, humor, etc. It is believed that no more interesting subject can be found than the study of the growth of our national literature, resembling, yet widely differing from, that of England, and having an important history and character of its own. The author feels that the time has come to try to criticise American literature, as compared with the other literatures of the world, on broad and philosophical grounds, recognizing its real merits, but without undue national pride. Beginning with The Race Elements in American Literature," and "The New Environments of the Saxon Mind," the whole literary period of America passes in review, down to the days of living writers. Professor Richardson, whose less ambitious "Primer of American Literature" has reached a sale of 48,000 copies, has often

been asked to prepare a more extended treatise; but the present work has been written on a wholly different and much enlarged critical plan, after long preparation. The second and concluding volume, on "American Poetry and Fiction," will appear in 1888.

"A book that is a credit to the writer and to the nation, and which has a grand future."-Hartford Post.

It is the most thoughtful and suggestive work on American literature that has been published.”—Boston Globe.

7s. 6d.

The United States Medal of Honor, which was instituted by Congress in 1862, and is similar in character to the order of merit established by Washington and to the British Victoria Cross, is the only authorized military decoration for valor in this country, and this volume has been planned to present some of the most stirring and dramatic incidents connected with the history of the medal.

Flags are captured, wounded comrades are rescued under deadly fire, and curious adventures on the frontier are related in a plain "camp-fire" fashion-principally by men in the ranks.
