So, believing our dogmatic or controversial preparation sufficiently complete in many departments of the Christian Vineyard, we would see quickened an active Spiritual Life, analogous to that Physical Life which was installed upon the young earth;-a Life diffused over all the expanse of human existence, and re-populating the sinful and sorrowful abodes of the soul with its strengthening and redeeming virtues, and impartial and indestructible hopes ;—a Life which shall embody all the dignity of a Divine Sanction -all the Constancy of a Thousand Martyrdoms wedded to inflexible Endurance-all the love which draped the Life and Death of Jesus, and all the gladness which shone in his triumphant Resurrection :—a Life, in fine, worthy to be called the Ultimatum of our Creed, clothing the gaunt skeleton of

Dogmatic Truth with the flesh and blood of enduring health and beauty, and leaving a Form invested with all the symmetry of Grecian Art, the glory of Primeval Innocence, and the heroism of Christian Virtue.

CHRISTIAN HEROISM.

WHAT we need, as much as anything else, is confidence in the power of laudable Effort, and faith in the success of persevering Labor. Every man needs the assurance, that, when he leagues himself with a just cause, he shall not organize and wield his forces in vainthat the shrines of Error and the strongholds of Evil shall be moved, in some degree, by his earnest and judicious exertions. This is the assurance of the Reform-Power, and the consolation of self-sacrificing Heroism. Those

who have made their influence visible in the improvement of human Faith and Life, have

not felt like one

"tilting with a straw,

Against a champion cased in adamant,"

but have borne within their scared breasts, while the hail of battle fell with most withering intensity, the conviction that God was with them with his Infinite Shield, and that he would pillow their heads at last on victorious fields, above the silent foe.

We all need this conviction to inspire within us an enduring strength-to make us firm amid the shocks of Adversity, and patient in the day of fleeting Fortune. Why should we

weary in well-doing ?"-" in due season, we shall reap, if we faint not."

There never was a true blow dealt for the regeneration of Society, that failed of its due effect. There never was a true voice raised in behalf of the Rights and Hopes of Man, that found not an echo in some quarter of the world, and never-dying agencies to bear it down to posterity.
