beauty that lie in the human soul, become touched with immortal vigor and fired with irrepressible delight.

Struck by electric sympathy with these inspiring thoughts, how beggarly and insignificant seem the common pursuits and ambitions of men! Can it be that we clamor and toil through the allotted days of Earth, for a few pitiful grains of dust, for a few cloudpalaces, brightened by a momentary effulgence-unmindful of treasures that fall in golden streams from the wide vault of Heaven-unmindful of whispers that come from Martyr's graves, and melodies that gush from high-tuned souls, along the line of Ages? What magical fascination find we in this Egyptian bondage, that we remain toiling with the brick-work of Mammon and Sensualism-children of ancient Pharaoh, and inheritors of his kingdom-instead of following the standard of our Christian Law-giver to the gate of Spiritual Canaan?

Oh, too long already has this benighting despotism enthralled our Manhood; too long

has this Satanic Magnetism clung, like a Nightmare, around our spirits! Prophets and Leaders, commissioned by the God of our Fathers, await to guide us into freedom, dominion and rest. Red seas of Peril shall be fatal only to our foes-in the desolate wilderness shall miraculous bread be given us-and lo! by Day, along our Heaven-ward march, shall hang the sheltering Cloud, and when the vague horrors of Night are about us, the Pillar of Fire shall declare the watchful guidance of the Eternal Spirit.

FEW spectacles are more mournfully solemn, than that of Manhood thwarted in its worthy aims, and disappointed in its generous desires;-the energy of Thought and the endurance of Labor wasted, as it were, and the heart, in loneliness and grief, lamenting its perished idols and blasted hopes. As a vital and gifted Manhood-enlightened by a true Faith and inspired by a noble Purpose-is the most glorious Agent visible in the fortunes and affairs of the world, the discouragement and subjugation of such a Manhood must be regarded as the greatest of human calamities.

Hitherto, the Experience of Humanity has

discovered but few individuals, comparatively speaking, who have been practical exponents of the better qualities of our nature; who have apprehended the true relations of the world and the real dignity of life, and, striving to adjust themselves harmoniously to their Race and to Nature, glorified God by submission to His Will and inspiration of His Spirit. Yet scarcely one individual of this small, heroic band, has been permitted to pursue his Heavenward journey unmolested; for the multitude and majority of Mankindfar from manifesting a willingness to follow such high-hearted, angel-minded travellershave apparently busied themselves with efforts to retard and embarrass them,evoking upon their path the most malicious and formidable dragons which their generation could boast, and besieging their rectitude and constaney with an unceasing cannonade of base suggestions and rankling suspicions.

To rise prominently above the intellectual and moral level of one's own generation, not only imposes the necessity of the most rigid
