GRANT, we beseech Thee, almighty God, that our devotion, with which we prepare for the birthday of blessed N., Thine Apostle, may (at his intercession) avail to the increase of his prayers for us. Through. I. LESSON. Ecclus. xliv. 22.

THE blessing of the Lord is upon the head of the righteous. Therefore the Lord gave him an heritage, and divided his portion among the twelve tribes. And he found favour in the sight of all flesh. And He magnified him so that his enemies stood in fear of him. By His words He caused the wonders to cease: He made him glorious in the sight of kings, and gave him a commandment for His people, and showed him His glory.

He sanctified him in his faithfulness and meekness, and chose him out of all men. He gave him commandments before His face, even the law of life and knowledge: and exalted him. An everlasting covenant He made with him the Lord beautified him with comely ornaments, and clothed him with a robe of glory. II. Proverbs iii. 13. HAPPY is the man that

findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding. For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold. She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her. Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches

and honour. Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her and happy is every one that retaineth her. The Lord by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath He established the heavens. By His knowledge the depths are broken up, and the clouds drop down the dew.

than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Ye are My friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of My Father I have made known unto you. Ye have not chosen Me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain : that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in My Name, He may give it you.

I. GOSPEL. St. John xii. 24. JESUS said to His dis

ciples: Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit. He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life

II. St. Matthew x. 26. JESUS said to His disciples: There is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known. What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light: and what ye hear in the ear, that preach ye And upon the housetops. fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill

the soul but rather fear Him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear ye not, therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows. Whosoever, therefore, shall confess Me before men, him will I confess also before My Father which is in heaven.

III. St. Matthew xvi. 24.

JESUS said to His dis

ciples: If any man will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for My sake shall find it. For what is a man profited, if he shall gain

the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? For the Son of Man shall come in the glory of His Father with His Angels; and then He shall reward every man according to his works. Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of Man coming in His king

St. Luke xiv. 26.

JE ESUS said to His disciples: If any man come to Me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple. And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after Me, cannot be My disciple. For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it? Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him, saying: This man began to build, and was not able to finish. Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand ?
