Oin whatsoever strait or trouble they may be placed; have mercy upon, and help those that are in tribulation. Amen.

21. Act of humility. most mighty and incomprehensible God, that art to be feared, who art Thou? and what am I that Thou shouldest vouchsafe to come to me, to feast with me, and make Thine abode with me? Lord, I am not worthy that Thou shouldest come under my roof, but speak the word only, and my soul shall be healed.

22. Direct your intention. O Lord Jesus Christ, in union with that divine intention, with which Thou Thyself, at the last Supper, and upon the altar of the Cross, didst offer up the Sacrifice of Thy Body and Blood to God the Father, this same Sacrifice do I intend to offer to Him. May it be well pleasing to Thee, O Jesus! and in Thee and through Thee be favourable to us unto everlasting life.

23. I implore Thee, O Lord Jesus Christ, in behalf of all those for whom I am bound to pray, to whom I am joined, or who are joined to me by any spiritual partaking, by relationship, nearness, friendship, commendation, devotion, almsgiving; who pray for me, in whose behalf I am a debtor, and who have commended themselves to my prayers; for all Christian people, and for this diocese; for all the bishops and clergy, that Thou mayest grant to them to persevere in Thy holy service humbly, faithfully and devotedly; for all faithful Christians, living and dead,

24. Prayer of St. Ambrose. To the Table of Thy most sweet Feast, O loving Lord, Jesu Christ, I, a sinner, presuming nothing on my own merits, but trusting in Thy mercy and goodness, approach with fear and trembling. For my heart and my body are stained with many and grievous sins, my thoughts and my lips have not been carefully kept. Wherefore, O gracious God, O terrible Majesty, I, in my misery, being brought into a great strait, return to Thee, the fountain of mercy, to Thee I hasten to be healed, and to flee under Thy protection: and Thee, before Whom I cannot stand as my Judge, I long to have as my Saviour. To Thee, O Lord, I show my wounds, to Thee I discover my shame. know my sins, for which I am afraid, are many and great. My trust is in Thy mercies, of which there is no end. Look therefore upon me with the eyes of Thy mercy, O Lord Jesus Christ, eternal King, God and Man, crucified for man. Hearken unto me whose trust is in Thee: have mercy upon me who am full of misery and sin, Thou fountain of mercy That wilt never cease to flow. Hail, Victim of salvation, offered for me and all

I

mankind upon the altar of the Cross. Hail, noble and precious Blood, flowing from the wounds of my crucified Lord Jesus Christ, and washing away the sins of the whole world. Remember Thy creature, O Lord, whom Thou hast redeemed with Thine own Blood. It repents me that I have sinned, and I desire to amend what I have done. Take away therefore from me, O most merciful Father, all my sins and iniquities; that being purified both in soul and body, I may be made meet worthily to taste the Holy of Holies; and grant, that this holy foretaste of Thy Body and Blood, which I, unworthy, purpose to take, may be for the remission of my sins; the perfect cleansing of my faults, the driving away of shameful thoughts, and the renewal of good desires; the healthful performance of works well-pleasing unto Thee, and the most sure protection of soul and body against the wiles of my enemies. Amen.

25. Another prayer. O King of Virgins, and Lover of chastity and innocence, by the heavenly dew of Thy blessing extinguish in my body whatever may kindle the burning of lustful desires, that so one even course of purity of mind and body may abide in me. Mortify in my members all incentives of the flesh, and every

hurtful emotion; and grant me with Thine other gifts, which are well-pleasing to Thee, true and persevering chastity, that I may be able to offer unto Thee the Sacrifice of praise with chaste body and clean heart. For with how great contrition of heart, and fountain of tears, with what reverence and awe, with what chastity of body and purity of soul, should that divine and heavenly Sacrifice be celebrated; wherein Thy Flesh indeed is taken, and Thy Blood indeed is drunk ; wherein the lowest and the highest, heavenly and earthly things are joined together; where is the presence of Thy holy Angels, and where, after a wonderful and unspeakable manner, Thou art Thyself both Sacrifice and Priest. Amen.

THANKSGIVING.

26. Affections. Behold, Lord, I have Thee now, Who hast all things, I possess Thee, Who possessest all things, and canst do all things. Therefore, O my God, and my All, do Thou wean my heart from everything else beside Thee, for in them there is nothing but vanity and vexation of spirit. Let my heart be fixed on Thee alone, let my rest be in Thee, where my treasure is, sovereign

truth, true happiness, and a joyful eternity.

O Jesus, let my soul feel the sweetness of Thy presence let me taste how sweet Thou art, O Lord, that being drawn on by Thy love, I may seek for nothing wherein to rejoice out of Thee, for Thou art the joy of my heart, and my portion, O Lord, for ever.

Thou art the Physician of my soul, Who with Thine own stripes hast healed my weakness. I am that sick soul whom Thou camest from heaven to heal; heal my soul, for I have sinned against Thee.

Thou art the Good Shepherd, Who hast laid down Thy life for Thy sheep. Behold, I am that sheep that was lost, and yet Thou vouchsafest to feed me with Thy Body and Blood; take me now upon Thy shoulders. What wilt Thou deny me, Who hast given me Thyself? Lead and guide me, and I shall lack nothing in the green pasture wherein Thou hast placed me, until Thou bring me unto the pastures of everlasting life.

O true Light, which lightenest every man that cometh into the world, lighten mine eyes that I never sleep in death.

O Fire, ever burning, and never failing, behold how lukewarm and cold I am: inflame my reins and my heart, that they may burn with love

of Thee; for Thou camest to send fire upon earth, and what wilt Thou, but that it be kindled ?**

O King of heaven and earth, rich in mercy, behold I am poor and needy. Thou knowest wherein I am most in want, Thou alone canst help and enrich me. Help me, O God, and out of the treasures of Thy goodness succour my needy soul!

O my Lord and my God, behold I am Thy servant: give me understanding, and stir up my affection, that I may know and do Thy will.

Thou art the Saint of God, the Lamb without spot, that takest away the sins of the world: take away from me whatever is hurtful to me and displeasing to Thee, and give me what Thou knowest to be pleasing to Thee, and profitable to myself.

Thou art my love and all my joy. Thou art my God and my All. Thou art the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup. Thou art He that shall return mine inheritance to me.

O my God and my All, may the sweet and burning power of Thy love, I beseech Thee, consume my soul: that I may die to the world for love of Thee, Who didst vouchsafe to die upon the Cross for love of me, O my God and my All. Amén." roz bod ym

27. Act of thanksgrung. What am I, O'infinite Goodness (if a priest, that Thou

C

hast willed that I should stand at Thy sacred Altar, and offer to Thee of Thine own gifts, this holy Sacrifice, this spotless Host!) that Thou wouldest that I should partake at Thy holy Altar of this Bread of Angels? How have I found favour in the sight of Thine eyes, that Thou shewest me the riches of Thy mercy? O come hither, all ye Angels and Saints of God, and I will tell you what the Lord hath done for my soul. I was an outcast in my house, and He hath taken me up out of the dust, and set me with the princes of His people, that I might eat Bread and drink Wine at His Table, all the days of my life. What thanks shall I offer Thee, most merciful Jesus, O Saviour of the world? or what | reward shall I give Thee for all the benefits that Thou hast done unto me? For of a truth of Thee, the Spouse of the Church, is that word of the Canticle understood, 'If a man would give all the substance of his house for love, it would utterly be contemned' as nothing. All that Thou hast, of Thy bounty Thou hast bestowed upon me; Thy Body, Thy Blood, Thy Soul, and Thy Divinity; and if I were to give Thee all the substance of my house, my body, soul, and freedom, together with all I have or can have, it would still be as nothing, in comparison with

Thy boundless and inestimable gift. What a debt I owe to Thee, of such value as Thou art Thyself, Who art infinite: thus does my debt exceed my power of paying it. Nevertheless, I am bold to ask of Thee to receive the gift which in the simpleness of my heart I offer Thee, saying with the Spouse 'My Beloved is mine, and I am His.' For as Thou hast given Thyself wholly unto me for the food of my soul, so will I consecrate myself wholly to Thy service; and whatever I have, whatever I am, all that I can, I give over to Thee, that Thou mayest claim me for Thine own, nor do Thou suffer me to keep back any part for myself.

28. Prayer for thyself. Grant me, I beseech Thee, O almighty and merciful God, fervently to desire, wisely to search out, truthfully to know, and perfectly to fulfil, all that is pleasing to Thee.

Order my state to the praise and glory of Thy Name; and what Thou requirest me to do, grant me the knowledge, the desire, and the power, and so to fulfil as I ought all that is expedient for the health of my soul.

Let my path to Thee, I pray, be safe, straightforward and perfect unto the end, not failing either amid adversity or prosperity; that I be not depressed on one side, nor elated on the other. In prosperity let me give thanks

to Thee, in adversity keep patience; neither rejoicing or grieving in aught, save what shall advance me to Thee, or shall take me from Thee. I will seek to please none, or fear to displease any, save Thee.

Grant me to do all in love, and to regard as dead all that belongs not to Thy service.

worthy affection may drag down; an unconquered heart, which no tribulation shall weary; a free heart, that no violent delectation shall possess for itself; give me an upright heart, which no sinister intention may draw aside.

Bestow upon me, O my God, understanding to know Thee, diligence to seek Thee, wisdom to find Thee, be

Let all that is transitory be worthless in mine eyes be-haviour that may please Thee, cause of Thee, and all that is Thine dear to me, and Thou, O my God, more than all. Let all toil that is for Thee be my delight, and all rest irksome that is not in Thee.

Grant me, sweetest Lord, frequently and fervently to direct my heart to Thee, and sadly and with full purpose of amendment to think over my shortcomings.

Make me, O my God, humble without pretence, cheerful without levity, serious without dejection, grave without moroseness, active without frivolity, truthful without duplicity, fearing Thee without despair, trusting in Thee without presumption, chaste without depravity, to correct my neighbour without angry feeling, by word and example to edify him without pride, obedient without gainsaying, patient without murmuring.

Give me, sweetest Jesus, a wakeful heart, which no curious imagination may withdraw from Thee; give me a steadfast heart, which no un

Grant me to suffer Thy punishments with repentance, to make good use of Thy blessings by Thy grace in my journey through life, and at length in the heavenly country to attain to the delight of Thy joys in glory, Who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen.

PREPARATION.

29. Worship and give thanks. O most sweet Saviour, Jesus Christ, I worship Thee with my whole heart; and with the inmost affections of my soul, I give thanks unto Thee, that with such great love, Thou didst redeem us, when miserably lost, with the price of Thy Blood; and in memory of this Thy love, as well as for a pledge
