Mr. DODGE. Yes; Mr. Grew is.

The CHAIRMAN. You may call your next witness.

Mr. CELLER. Mr. Chairman, there are seven more witnesses.

The CHAIRMAN. Are these witnesses from out of town?

Mr. CELLER. They do not live in Washington.

Mr. MASON. Could you have them here tomorrow?

Mr. CELLER. Yes, sir.

The CHAIRMAN. It has been the policy of this committee to try to accommodate witnesses who come here from out of town.

Mr. CELLER. They can be here tomorrow.

The CHAIRMAN. Well, then, we will adjourn until 10 o'clock tomorrow morning.

(Whereupon, at 12 noon, the hearing was adjourned until 10 a. m. of the following day, Thursday, March 8, 1945.)

TO GRANT A QUOTA TO EASTERN HEMISPHERE INDIANS AND TO MAKE THEM RACIALLY ELIGIBLE FOR NATURALIZATION

THURSDAY, MARCH 8, 1945

HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES,

COMMITTEE ON IMMIGRATION AND NATURALIZATION,

Washington, D. C. The committee met at 10 a. m., the Honorable Samuel Dickstein (chairman) presiding.

The CHAIRMAN. The committee will please come to order. Mr. Celler, will you call your next witness?

Mr. CELLER. Mr. Chairman, the next witness is Sue Weddell, executive secretary of the India committee. Miss Weddell.

STATEMENT OF SUE WEDDELL, EXECUTIVE SECRETARY, INDIA COMMITTEE, NEW YORK, N. Y.

Miss WEDDELL. Mr. Chairman and members of the committee, I bring a statement in support of the Luce-Celler bills on behalf of the Foreign Missions Conference of North America. I speak as an executive secretary of the Foreign Missions Conference, and secretary of its India committee.

Dr. J. L. Dodds and Murray Titus, who were here yesterday, are chairmen of this committee, and are the executive secretaries of the Presbyterian and Methodist Boards of Missions, responsible for work in India. They were unable to stay, and I am glad to bring this report

to you.

Mr. ALLEN. If I may interrupt for just a moment, to get a little information about what groups fit into the Foreign Missions Conference? I am asking purly for information.

Miss WEDDELL. Yes. I think that is in the very next paragraph: The Foreign Missions Conference of North America is an agency which operates in behalf of 123 foreign mission boards and agencies in the United States and Canada having work and workers overseas. Of these boards and agencies 58 have work in India and make up the membership of the India committee of the Foreign Missions Conference of North America, which we represent..

Mr. ALLEN. Will you put in the record at that point a list of those 123 foreign mission boards and agencies in the United States and Canada.

Miss WEDDELL. I will be glad to supply a list. They are practically every one of the denominations we around this table know anything about, and include practically every denomination that has work in India.
