The Lord Jesus Christ.

"By Him let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually."-Heb. xiii. 15.

Göttingen, 337.]

7.7.

[F. PIERPOINT

11 FOR the beauty of the earth,
For the beauty of the skies,

For the love which from our birth
Over and around us lies:

Christ our God, to Thee we raise
This, our sacrifice of praise.
2 For the beauty of each hour
Of the day and of the night,
Hill and vale and tree and flower,
Sun and moon and stars of light:
Christ, our God, to Thee we raise
This, our sacrifice of praise.

8 For the joy of human love,
Brother, sister, parent, child,
Friends on earth, and friends above;
For all gentle thoughts and mild:
Christ, our God, to Thee we raise
This our sacrifice of praise.

4 For each perfect gift of Thine
To our race so freely given,
Graces, human and Divine,

Flowers of earth, and buds of heaven:
Christ, our God, to Thee we raise

This, our sacrifice of praise.

5 For Thy church that evermore
Lifteth holy hands above,
Offering up on every shore
Its pure sacrifice of love:

Christ, our God, to Thee we raise
This, our sacrifice of praise.

"We have seen His star in the East."-Matt. ii. 2.

Hexham, 369.

12 BRIGHTEST and best of the sons of the

morning,

Dawn on our darkness, and lend us Thine aid; Star of the east, the horizon adorning,

Guide where our infant Redeemer is laid!

2 Cold on His cradle the dew-drops are shining; Low lies his head with the beasts of the stall; Angels adore him, in slumber reclining, Maker, and Monarch, and Saviour of all, 8 Say, shall we yield Him, in costly devotion, Odours of Edom and offerings divine?

Gems of the mountain, and pearls of the ocean Myrrh from the forest, or gold from the mine 4 Vainly we offer each ample oblation;

Vainly with gifts would His favour secure : Richer by far is the heart's adoration;

Dearer to God are the prayers of the poor. 5 Brightest and best of the sons of the morning, Dawn on our darkness, and lend us Thine aid! Star of the East, the horizon adorning,

Guide where our infant Redeemer is laid!

"When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy."-Matt. ii. 10.

Tiberias, 344.]

7.7.

S with gladness men of old
Did the guiding star behold;
As with joy they hailed its light,
Leading onward, beaming bright!
So, most gracious Lord, may we
Evermore be led to Thee.

[W. C. DIX

2 As with joyful steps they sped
To that lowly manger-bed;
There to bend the knee before
Him whom heaven and earth adore;
So may we with willing feet

Ever seek the mercy-seat.

8 As they offered gifts most rare
At that manger rude and bare;
So may we with holy joy,
Pure, and free from sin's alloy,
All our costliest treasures bring,
Christ! to Thee, our heavenly King.

4 Holy Jesus, every day

Keep us in the narrow way;
And, when earthly things are past,
Bring our ransomed souls at last
Where they need no star to guide,
Where no clouds Thy glory hide.

5 In the heavenly country bright
Need they no created light;

Thou, its Light, its Joy, its Crown,
Thou, its Sun which goes not down;
There for ever, may we sing

Alleluias to our King.

"And Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, being forty days tempted of the devil.

And in

those days He did eat nothing."-Luke iv. 1, 2.

Heinlein, 349.]

14 FORTY days and forty nights

Thou wast fasting in the wild;
Forty days and forty nights
Tempted, and yet undefiled.

2 Sunbeams scorching all the day;
Chilly dew-drops nightly shed;
Prowling beasts about Thy way;
Stones Thy pillow; earth Thy bed.

3 Lord, if Satan, vexing sore,
Flesh or spirit should assail,
Thou hast vanquished him before;
Grant we may not faint or fail.

4 So shall we have peace divine;
Holier gladness ours shall be;
Round us, too, shall angels shine,
Such as ministered to Thee.

5 Keep, O keep us, Saviour dear,
Ever constant by Thy side;
That with Thee we may appear
At th' eternal Eastertide.

"Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again."

Cherwell, 367.]

[SIR E. DENNY

15 WHAT grace, O Lord, and beauty shone

Around Thy steps below!

What patient love was seen in all
Thy life and death of woe!

2 For ever on Thy burdened heart
A weight of sorrow hung;

Yet no ungentle, murmuring word
Escaped Thy silent tongue.

8 Thy foes might hate, despise, revile,
Thy friends unfaithful prove;
Unwearied in forgiveness still,
Thy heart could only love.

4 Oh, give us hearts to love like Thee,
Like Thee, O Lord, to grieve
Far more for others' sins, than all
The wrongs that we receive.

5 One with Thyself, may every eye,
In us, Thy brethren, see

That gentleness and grace which spring
From union, Lord, with Thee.

"God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross."

16 WE sing the praise of Him who died, Of Him who died upon the cross;

The sinner's hope let men deride,
For this we count the world but loss.

2 Inscribed upon the cross we see,
In shining letters, "God is Love;"
He bears our sins upon the tree,
He brings us mercy from above.
3 The cross! it takes our guilt away,
It holds the fainting spirit up;
It cheers with hope the gloomy day,
And sweetens every bitter cup.

4 It makes the coward spirit brave,
And nerves the feeble arm for fight;
It takes its terror from the grave,
And gilds the bed of death with light.
5 The balm of life, the cure of woe,
The measure and the pledge of love;
The sinner's refuge here below,
The angels' theme in heaven above.

17 THOU art the way; by Thee alone

From sin and death we flee;

And he who would the Father seek,
Must seek Him, Lord, by Thee.

2 Thou art the Truth; Thy word alone
True wisdom can impart :

Thou only canst inform the mind,
And purify the heart.

3 Thou art the Life; the rending tomb
Proclaims Thy conquering arm;
And those who put their trust in Thee
Nor death nor hell shall harm.

4 Thou art the Way, the Truth, the Life:
Grant us that Way to know,

That Truth to keep, that Life to win,
Whose joys eternal flow.

"The love of Christ constraineth us."-2 Cor. v. 14.

18 BLESSED Saviour, is Thy love
So great, so full, so free?

Behold, we give our thoughts, our hearts,
Our lives, our all, to Thee.

2 We love Thee for the glorious worth
Which in Thyself we see;

We love Thee for that shameful cross
Endured so patiently.

3 No man of greater love can boast
Than for his friend to die;

Thou for Thine enemies wast slain!
What love with Thine can vie?

4 Make us like Thee in meekness, love,
And every beauteous grace;
From glory unto glory changed,
Till we behold Thy face.
