7 What shall I, frail man, be pleading? Who for me be interceding?

When the just are mercy needing. 8 King of majesty tremendous, Who dost free salvation send us, Fount of pity! then befriend us. 9 Think, kind Jesu,-my salvation Caused Thy wondrous incarnation; Leave me not to reprobation!

10 Faint and weary, Thou hast sought me, On the cross of suffering bought me ;Shall such grace be vainly brought me? 11 Righteous Judge of retribution, Grant Thy gift of absolution,

Ere that reckoning day's conclusion! 12 Guilty, now, I pour my moaning, All my shame with anguish owning; Spare, O God, Thy suppliant groaning! 13 Thou the sinful woman savestThou the dying thief forgavestAnd to me a hope vouchsafest,

14 Worthless are my prayers and sighing, Yet, good Lord, in grace complying, Rescue me from fires undying!

15 With Thy favoured sheep O place me!
Nor among the goats abase me;
But to Thy right hand upraise me.
16 While the wicked are confounded,
Doomed to flames of woe unbounded,
Call me! with Thy saints surrounded.
17 Low I kneel, with heart submission;
See, like ashes, my contrition-
Help me in my last condition!

18 Ah, that day of tears and mourning!
From the dust of earth returning,
Man for judgment must prepare him ;-
Spare, O God, in mercy spare him!
Lord, who didst our souls redeem,
Grant a blessed requiem. Amen.

The Holy Spirit.

41 OUR blest Redeemer, ere He breathed

His tender, last farewell,

A Guide, a Comforter bequeathed
With us to dwell.

2 He came sweet influence to impart,
A gracious, willing Guest,

While He can find one humble heart
Wherein to rest.

3 And His that gentle voice we hear,
Soft as the breath of even,

[fear,

That checks each thought, that calms each
And speaks of heaven.

4 And every virtue we possess,
And every conquest won,
And every thought of holiness,
Are His alone.

5 Spirit of purity and grace,
Our weakness, pitying, see:
O make our hearts Thy dwelling-place,
And worthier Thee.

6 O praise the Father; praise the Son;
Blest Spirit, praise to Thee;

All praise to God, the Three in One,
The One in Three. Amen.

"The Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost."-John xiv. 26.

42 COME, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire,

And lighten with celestial fire.

Thou the anointing Spirit art,

Who dost Thy sevenfold gifts impart:

Thy blessed unction from above

Is comfort, life, and fire of love;

2 Enable with perpetual light
The dulness of our blinded sight:
Anoint and cheer our soiled face
With the abundance of Thy grace;
Keep far our foes, give peace at home;
Where Thou art guide, no ill can come.

3 Teach us to know the Father, Son,
And Thee, of both, to be but One;
That, through the ages all along,
This still may be our endless song:
Praise be to Thy eternal merit,

Thou Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

"Thou sendest forth Thy Spirit, they are created; and Thou renewest the face of the earth."-Ps.

7.7. [ROBT. II. OF FRANCE, tr, by CASWALL.

HOLY Spirit! Lord of Light!

From Thy clear, celestial height,
Thy pure, beaming radiance give;
Come, Thou Father of the poor!
Come, with treasures which endure;
Come, Thou Light of all that live!

2 Thou, of all consolers best,
Visiting the troubled breast,
Dost refreshing peace bestow;
Thou in toil art comfort sweet,
Pleasant coolness in the heat,
Solace in the midst of woe.

3 Light Immortal! Light Divine!
Visit Thou these hearts of Thine,
And our inmost being fill:
If Thou take Thy grace away,
Nothing pure in man will stay;
All his good is turned to ill.

4 Heal our wounds, our strength renew;
On our dryness pour Thy dew;
Wash the stains of guilt away:
Bend the stubborn heart and will;
Melt the frozen, warm the ohill;
Guide the steps that go astray.

5 Thou, on those who evermore
Thee confess and Thee adore,
In Thy sevenfold gifts descend:
Give them comfort when they die;
Give them life with Thee on high;
Give them joys which never end.

"He shall teach you all things.”—John xiv. 26.

44 GRACIOUS Spirit, dwell with me,

myself would gracious be;

And with words that help and heal,
Would Thy life in mine reveal;
And with actions bold and meek,
Would for Christ, my Saviour, speak.

2 Truthful Spirit, dwell with me,-
I myself would truthful be;
And with wisdom kind and clear,
Let Thy life in mine appear;
And with actions brotherly,
Speak my Lord's sincerity.

3 Tender Spirit, dwell with me,-
I myself would tender be;
Shut my heart up like a flower,
In temptation's darksome hour;
Open it when shines the sun,
And His love by fragrance own.

4 Mighty Spirit, dwell with me,-
I myself would mighty be;
Mighty so as to prevail,

Where, unaided, man must fail;
Ever, by a mighty hope,

Pressing on and bearing up.

5 Holy Spirit, dwell with me,-
I myself would holy be;
Separate from sin, I would

Choose and cherish all things good;

And, whatever I can be,

Give to Him who gave me Thee.

"He shall give you another Comforter."

45 IN the hour of my distress,

[R. HERRICK.

When temptations me oppress,
And when I my sins confess,
Sweet Spirit, comfort me.

2 When I lie within my bed,
Sick in heart and sick in head,
And with doubts discomforted,
Sweet Spirit, comfort me.

3 When the house doth sigh and weep,
And the world is drowned in sleep,
Yet mine eyes the watch do keep,
Sweet Spirit, comfort me.

4 When the tempter me pursu'th
With the sins of all my youth,
And reproves me for untruth,
Sweet Spirit, comfort me.

5 When the judgment is revealed,
And that opened which was sealed;
When to Thee I have appealed,
Sweet Spirit, comfort me.

8.8.

[J. KEBLE.

46 How
OW dare we pray Thee dwell within

These hearts defiled by wilful sin?
Yet, Holy Ghost, do not depart,
Leave not to earth our earthly heart;
And if Thou seest us erring still,
O bend to Thine our stubborn will,
And bring us to the fold again
If need, by chastisement and pain.

2 Bring us, by all the powers of sense,
By all the course of providence,
By inmost conscience, not yet dumb,
By all the past, by all to come,
By God's best gifts, His Son to die,
And Thee our hearts to sanctify;
Bring us, before our sun go down,
To bear the cross, to win the crown.
