The arrow is flown, The moment is gone,
The millennial year

Rushes on to our view, and eternity's here.

3 O that each in the day Of His coming might

say,

I have fought my way through,

I have finished the work Thou didst give me to do."

O that each from his Lord May receive the glad word,

"Well and faithfully done,

Enter into My joy, and sit down on My throne."

The New Year.

"I will glorify Thy name."-Ps. lxxxvi. 12.

Peniel, 413.]

7.5.

[L. TUTTIETT.

311 FATHER, here we dedicate

This new year to Thee,

In whatever worldly state
Thou wilt have us be.

Not from sorrow, pain, or care,
Freedom dare we claim;
This alone shall be our prayer:
"Glorify Thy name."

2 Can a child presume to choose
Where or how to live?
Can a Father's love refuse
All the best to give?
More Thou givest every day
Than the best can claim;
Nor withholdest aught that may
"Glorify Thy name."

8 If in mercy Thou wilt spare
Joys we yet partake;

If in life, serene and fair,
Brighter rays may break;

Thee our hearts, while glad they sing,
Shall in all proclaim;

And, whate'er the year may bring,

[ocr errors]

Glorify Thy name."

4 If Thou callest to the cross,
And its shadow come,
Turning all our gain to loss,
Shrouding heart and home;
May we think how Thy dear Son
To His glory came,
In His footsteps follow on;
"Glorify Thy name.'

Cana, 475.

312 FAITH of our fathers, living still,

In spite of dungeon, fire, and sword;
O, how our hearts beat high with joy
Whene'er we hear that glorious word!
Faith of our fathers, holy faith,
We will be true to thee till death.

2 Our fathers, chained in prisons dark,
Were still in heart and conscience free;
And blest would be their children's fate,
Though they, like them, should die for thee.
Faith of our fathers, holy faith,

We will be true to thee till death.

3 Faith of our fathers; God's great power
Shall soon all nations win for thee;

And through the truth that comes from God,
Mankind shall then be truly free.
Faith of our fathers, holy faith,
We will be true to thee till death.

4 Faith of our fathers, we will love
Both friend and foe in all our strife,
And preach thee too, as love knows how,
By kindly words and virtuous life.
Faith of our fathers, holy faith,
We will be true to thee till death.

"Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect-but I follow after."-Phil. iii. 12. "He charged us before God and His blessed angels, if God should reveal anything to us by any other instrument of His, to be as ready to receive it as any truth of his ministry; for he was very confident the Lord had yet more light and truth to break forth out of His Holy Word."-Narrative of Pastor Robinson's Address to the Pilgrim Fathers. Petersham, 482.]

WE

C.M.D.

[G. RAWSON. E limit not the truth of God 313 To our poor reach of mind; By notions of our day and sect, Crude, partial, and confined. No, let a new and better hope Within our hearts be stirred; "The Lord hath yet more light and truth To break forth from His Word."

2 Who dares to bind to his dull sense
The oracles of heaven,

For all the nations, tongues, and climes,
And all the ages given;

That universe, how much unknown!
That ocean unexplored!

"The Lord hath yet more light and truth
To break forth from His Word."

8 Darkling our great forefathers went
The first steps of the way!

'Twas but the dawning, yet to grow
Into the perfect day.

And grow it shall; our glorious sun

More fervid rays afford;

"The Lord hath yet more light and truth
To break forth from His Word."

4 The valleys passed, ascending still
Our souls would higher climb,
And look down from supernal heights
On all the bygone time.

Upward we press-the air is clear,
And the sphere-music heard:

"The Lord hath yet more light and truth
To break forth from His Word."

5 O Father, Son, and Spirit, send
U's increase from above;

Enlarge, expand all Christian souls
To comprehend Thy love;

And make us still go on to know
With nobler powers conferred:

"The Lord hath yet more light and truth
To break forth from His Word."

Opening of a New Church.

"I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and His train filled the Temple."-Isa. vi. 1. Mainzer, 400.]

L.M.

314 THOU, who didst the Temple fill

With Thy resplendent awful train,

The glory of Thine Israel still,
Appear in those bright robes again.

2 In us, and round about us, shine,
There cause us to behold Thy face:
O make this tabernacle Thine;
O sanctify this lowly place.

3 Now send the promised unction down,
And all our waiting hearts inspire;
Lord Jesus, make Thy goings known,
Thy ministers a flame of fire.

4 Work with them, and confirm Thy word To all who worship in this place:

O pour upon us, holy Lord,
Unceasing showers of saving grace.

5 So shall Thy servants' hopes be crowned,
And glory to Thy Name be given;
While this Bethesda shall be found,
The house of God, the gate of heaven.

Sabbath Morning.

"I was in the Spirit on the Lord's Day.

THIS

[blocks in formation]

IIS is the day of Light! 315 Let there be light to-day; O Dayspring rise upon our night, And chase its gloom away.

2 This is the day of Rest!

Our failing strength renew;
On weary brain and troubled breast
Shed Thou Thy fresh'ning dew.

3 This is the day of Peace!
Thy Peace our spirits fill !

4

Bid Thou the blasts of discord cease,
The waves of strife be still.

This is the day of Prayer!

Let earth to heaven draw near;

Lift up our hearts to seek Thee there,
Come down to meet us here.

5 This is the first of days!

Send forth Thy quickening breath,
And wake dead souls to love and praise,
O Vanquisher of Death!

"How amiable are Thy tabernacles, O Lord of Hosts."-Ps. lxxxiv. 1.

Maidstone, 435.]

[blocks in formation]

316 PLEASANT are Thy courts above,

In the land of light and love;

Pleasant are Thy courts below,
In this land of sin and woe:
O, my spirit longs and faints
For the converse of Thy saints,
For the brightness of Thy face,
For Thy fulness, God of grace.
