2 Tell them how the Father's will
Made the world, and keeps it still,
How He sent His Son to save
All who help and comfort crave.
3 Tell of our Redeemer's love,
Who for ever doth remove
By His holy sacrifice,

All the guilt that on us lies.

4 Tell them of the Spirit given
Now, to guide us up to heaven,
Strong and holy, just and true,
Working both to will and do.

5 Word of Life! most pure and strong,
Lo! for Thee the nations long;
Spread, till from its dreary night
All the world awakes to light.

6 Up, the ripening fields ye see,
Mighty shall the harvest be,
But the reapers still are few,
Great the work they have to do.

7 Lord of harvest, let there be
Joy and strength to work for Thee
Let the nations far and near

See Thy light, and learn Thy fear.

"Blessed are ye that sow beside all waters."

Gildas, 321.]

194

Sow

[blocks in formation]

in the morn thy seed,
At eve hold not thine hand;

To doubt and fear, give thou no heed,
Broad-cast it o'er the land.

2 Beside all waters sow,

3

The highway furrows stock,

Drop it where thorns and thistles grow,
Scatter it on the rock.

The good, the fruitful ground,
Expect not here nor there,

O'er hill and dale, by plots 'tis found;
Go forth, then, everywhere.

4

Thou know'st not which may thrive,
The late or early sown;

Grace keeps the precious germs alive,
When and wherever strown.

5 And duly shall appear,

In verdure, beauty, strength,
The tender blade, the stalk, the ear,
And the full corn at length.

6 Thou canst not toil in vain;
Cold, heat, and moist, and dry,
Shall foster and mature the grain
For garners in the sky.

7

Thence, when the glorious end,
The day of God is come,

The angel-reapers shall descend,

And heaven cry, "Harvest Home."

"Sing unto the Lord a new song, and His praise from the end of the earth."-Isa. xlii. 10.

[LOGAN

195 SING to the Lord in joyful strains,

Let earth His praise resound,
Ye who upon the ocean dwell,
And fill the isles around.

2 O city of the Lord, begin
The universal song;

And let the scattered villages
The cheerful notes prolong.

8 Let Kedar's wilderness afar,
Lift up its lonely voice;
And let the tenants of the rock,
In accents rude rejoice.

4 Till, midst the stream of distant lands,
The islands sound His praise;

And all combined with one accord,
Jehovah's glories raise.

"So shall He sprinkle many nations."-Isa. lii. 15. Stuttgart, 335.1 [A. C. COXE.

8.7.

196 SAVIOUR, sprinkle many nations,

let Thy sorrows be,
By Thy pains and consolations
Draw the Gentiles unto Thee;
Of Thy cross the wondrous story
Be to all the nations told;
Let them see Thee in Thy glory,
And Thy mercy manifold.

2 Far and wide, though all unknowing,
Pants for Thee each mortal breast;
Human tears for Thee are flowing,
Human hearts in Thee would rest.
Thirsting, as for dews of even,

As the new-mown grass for rain,
Thee they seek, as God of Heaven,
Thee, as Man, for sinners slain.
3 Saviour, lo! the isles are waiting,
Stretched the hand, and strained the
sight,

For Thy Spirit, new creating

Love's pure flame and wisdom's light; Give the word, and of the preacher Speed the foot, and touch the tongue, Till on earth by every creature

Glory to the Lamb be sung.

"Revive Thy work."-Habakkuk iii. 2. Hampton, 183.]

197 REVIVE Thy work, O Lord,

2

3

[L. C. W.

Thy work of quickening power;

O'er earth's parched wilderness pour down
The Pentecostal shower.

Revive Thy work, O Lord,

In far-off Indian lands:

Bid Ethiopia's myriad tribes

Stretch forth to Thee their hands.

Revive Thy work, O Lord,
Amid the polar snows,

Let Nature's frozen wastes rejoice.
And blossom as the rose.

Revive Thy work, O Lord,
Among the long-lost sheep

Of Israel's house, and bid them look
On Him they pierced, and weep.

Revive Thy work, O Lord,

In this our native isle,

With floods of light and life divine,
Make all her borders smile.

Revive Thy work, O Lord,
In our own souls, we pray;
May all for the great harvest-home
Be ripening day by day.

"Where is the promise of His coming."-2 Pet. iii. 4. Winchester, 57.]

[HEBER.

198 O SAVIOUR, is Thy promise fled?

Nor longer might Thy grace endure,

To heal the sick, and raise the dead,
And preach Thy Gospel to the poor?

2 Come, Jesus, come! return again;
With brighter beam Thy servants bless,
Who long to feel Thy perfect reign,
And share Thy kingdom's happiness.

8 A feeble race, by passion driven,
In darkness and in doubt we roam,
And lift our anxious eyes to heaven,
Our hope, our harbour, and our home.
4 Yet 'mid the wild and wintry gale,
When death rides darkly o'er the sea,
And strength and earthly daring fail,
Our prayers, Redeemer, rest on Thee.
Come, Jesus, come! and as of yore
The prophet went to clear Thy way,
A harbinger Thy feet before,

A dawning to Thy brighter day;

6 So now may grace with heavenly shower
Our stony hearts for truth prepare;
Sow in our souls the seed of power,
Then come and reap Thy harvest there.

LORD our God, arise,

[R. WARDLAW.

The cause of truth maintain;

And wide o'er all the peopled world
Extend its blessed reign.

2 Thou Prince of Life, arise,

Nor let Thy glory cease;

Far spread the conquests of Thy grace,
And bless the earth with peace.

8 Thou Holy Ghost, arise,

Expand Thy quickening wing,

And o'er a dark and ruined world,

Let light and order spring.

4

All on the earth arise,

To God the Saviour sing;

From shore to shore, from earth to heaven,
Let echoing anthems ring.

"Thy kingdom come."-Matt. vi. 10.

St. Michael, 2.1

S.M.

200 COME, kingdom of our God!

[J. JOHNS

Sweet reign of light and love,
Shed peace, and hope, and joy abroad,
And wisdom from above.

2 Over our spirits first

[ocr errors]

Extend Thy healing reign;

Then raise and quench the sacred thirst
That never pains again.

Come, kingdom of our God!

And make the broad earth Thine;
Stretch o'er her lands and isles the rod
That flowers with grace divine.

4 Soon may all tribes be blest

5

With fruit from Life's giad tree;
And in its shade like brothers rest,
Sons of one family.

Come, kingdom of our God!
And raise Thy glorious throne
In worlds by the undying trod,
Where God shall bless His own.
