The Right Reverend

A. M. Randolph, D.D., LL.D., D.C.L.

Bishop of the Diocese of Southern Virginia

AND

Report of Bishop Coadjutor

Rt. Rev. B. D. Tucker, D. D.

TO THE

Twenty-second Annual Council

May 26-28, 1914

REPORT AND ADDRESS OF THE BISHOP,
RT. REV. A. M. RANDOLPH, D. D.

The changes in the Diocese, by removal, have been fewer than for several years past.

The Rev. James William Boyd died at his home in Roanoke, Virginia, Sunday, March 15, 1914. His health had been failing for several years, but he never gave up the work of the ministry until his strength was gone, during the last months of his life. When I last heard him preach his sermon had for its theme the love of Christ, and it is sweet to remember how the thought appeared to have saturated his feeling and kindled his imagination. May God bless his memory, and send comfort to his home.

The reports of your Bishops will record nearly as large a number of confirmations as any previous year in the history of the Diocese. I have observed in my own ministrations a larger number of adults coming forward for confirmation than in previous experience. The good will and the confidence in our Church and its fidelity to the Gospel among the Protestant Churches around us, notwithstanding the attitude of the anti-protestant elements which have disturbed our peace, has as far as my observation extended, grown and deepened among the Protestant Churches around us.

But I must transfer the

discussion of this hopeful sign of our time to later on in

this address.

Old Donation Church, Princess Anne, preached, and Confirmed 12. Old Donation Church deserves especial mention as an example and inspiration to missionary work in the Diocese. It reveals the power of a faithful pastorate and the mission of the Protestant Episcopal Church in holding the memories and loyalty of its people through long generations. The ruined walls of the Old Church are still standing. Near by is the new temporary structure, built withing the last year by the people. In this humble building I preached to a congregation of 300 people, among them many lineal descendants of the earliest settlers in America. Would you honor the past of your homes and your country, would you extend the hand in generous brotherhood to the descendants of your oldest Episcopal community in the Diocese, give us $3,000.00, and we will build the Old Church as it was in the long past, and make it a blessing to the generation of the present.
