THE DEATH OF RIZZIO.

Quen Mary Stuart noticed Rizzio for his musical talents when engaged to the ambassador of Savoy, at the court of Edinburgh; he became her favorite and secretary. His capacity and insolence caused him to be hated by all the nobility; Lord Darnley the queen's husband was so jealous of this piedmontese favorite that he swore his death, and to render his revenge still more cruel, he ordered him to be murdered in the queen's apartment.

Mary Stuart was at supper with the countess of Argyle and Rizzio on March the 9 th 1566, when chancellor Merton came in at the bead of the 'conspirators, and after having at first in the presence of the queen abused Rizzio in a very outra geous manner they dragged him afterwards into the next room, and

gave him fifty six wounds of which at length he died. There is still to be seen in the castle of Holy - Rood the place where this horrid deed was done, and it is said the floor is yet stained with blood.

The picture of the death of Rizzio is one of the masterpieces of the painter J. Opie; it displays all the particularities of his style remarkable for a simple composition , a sweet expression, a noble execution and a true beautiful extraordinary colour.

These qualities conferred on the author the litle of the English Caravage.

Les talens de Rizzio pour la musique le firent remarquer par la reine Marie Stuart, tandis qu'il était attaché à l'ambassadeur de Savoie près la cour d'Edimbourg; il devint son favori, et elle le prit à son service comme secrétaire. Sa capacité et son insolence le firent bientôt détester de toute la noblesse ; et lord Darnley, mari de la reine, ayant conçu de la jalousie contre le favori piémontais, il conjura sa perte. Voulant même rendre sa vengeance plus cruelle, il le fit assassiner dans l'appartement de la reine,

Marie Stuart était à souper avec la comtesse d'Argyle et Rizzio, le 9 mars 1566, lorsque le chancelier Morton entra å la tête des conjurés , qui d'abord en présence de la reine l'accablèrent d'outrages. Ayant ensuite entrainé Rizzio dans la pièce voisine , il y reçut cinquante-six blessures dont il finit par périr. On fait encore voir dans le château d'Holy-Rood la place où fut commis cet acle d'atrocité, et le plancher en est encore ensanglanté, suivant ce qu'en dit Walter Scott dans la jolie fille de Perlh.

Le tableau de la mort de Rizzio est une des plus célèbres productions du peintre J. Opie; il offre toutes les particularités de son style, remarquable par une con position simple, une belle expression, un grand effet , une vérité et une beauté de couleur extraordinaires. Ces qualités ont fait donner à l'auteur le titre de Caravage anglais..
