Every branch in me that beareth not fruit, he taketh away and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it (a), that it may bring forth more 3 fruit. Now ye are clean (b) through the word which 4 I have fpoken unto you. Abide in me, and I in you (c). As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine: no more can ye, except 5 ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the fame bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do no6 thing (d). If a man abide not in me, he is caft forth as a branch (e), and is withered; and men gather them, and caft them into the fire, and they are burned. If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye afk what ye will, and it fhall be done unto you. 8 Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fhall (k) I fhall not long have an opportunity of inftructing you, the powers of the world being now at work to deftroy me; and though guilty of no fin myself, I am ready to lay down my life for the fins of the world, that I may fulfil the will of my Father. (1) Let us arife from table, and go away. (a) He dreffeth and pruneth it, that it may be fit for bearing (6) Thus are you carefully and tenderly dreffed, and made clean by my word. (c) Take care to remain united to me as branches are to their flock; and I will nourish and invigorate you by my fpirit. (d) Broken off and feparate from me, you can do nothing. (e) As a branch cut off, 9 fruit; 9 fruit; fo fhall ye be my difciples (f). As the Father hath loved me, fo have I loved you: continue ye in 10 my love. If ye keep my commandments, ye fhall abide in my love (g): even as I have kept my FaII ther's commandments, and abide in his love. These things have I fpoken unto you, that my joy might 12 remain in you, and that your joy might be full. This is my commandment (b), That ye love one another, 13 as I have loved you. Greater love hath no man than 14 this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Ye are my friends, if ye do whatfoever I command you. 15 Henceforth I call you not fervants; for the fervant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends (i); for all things that I have heard of 16 my Father, I have made known unto you. Ye have not chosen me, but I have chofen you, and ordained you, that you should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit fhould remain (k): that whatsoever ye fhall afk of the Father in my name, he may give it 17 you. These things I command you, that ye love 18 one another. If the world hate you, ye know that it 19 hated me before it hated you. If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chofen you out 20 of the world, therefore the world hateth you (1). Re member the word that I faid unto you, The fervant (f) It is only by being fruitful in good works, that you can be truly my difciples. (g) You will continue to be beloved by me, as I am for dience beloved by my Father. my obe(h) This is my principal diftinguishing commandment. Chap. xiii. 34. (i) I have treated you in the most friendly and affectionate manper, inftructing you most plainly in all things neceffary for your fal vation. (k) That the effect of your labours, in converting multitudes to the faith in Chrift, may remain to the end of the world. (If ye were like the rest of the world, you would efcape all the perfecution you must now expect for preaching against their vices. is not greater than the lord (m). If they have perfecuted me, they will alfo perfecute you: if they have 21 kept my faying, they will keep your's alfo. But all these things will they do unto you for my name's 22 fake, because they know not him that sent me. If I had not come, and spoken unto them, they had not had fin (n): but now they have no cloke for their 23 fin. He that hateth me, hateth my Father alfö. 24 If I had not done among them the works which none other man did, they had not had fin: but now have they both feen, and hated both me and my Father. 25 But this cometh to pass, that the word might be fulfilled that is written in the law, They hated me with26 out a caufe. But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he 27 fhall teftify of me (o).
