26 to enter into the kingdom of God. And they were aftonished out of measure, saying among themselves, 27 Who then can be faved? And Jesus looking upon them, faith, With men it is impoffible, but not with God: for with God all things are poffible. 28 Then Peter began to say unto him, Lo, we have 29 left all, and have followed thee. And Jefus answered and faid, Verily I fay unto you, there is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or fisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my 30 fake and the gofpel's, But he shall receive an hundred-fold (i) now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with perfecutions: and in the world to come eternal 31 life. But many that are first, shall be last: and the laft, first.

32 And they were in the way going up to Jerufalem : and Jesus went before them; and they were amaze ed (k), and as they followed, they were afraid. And he took again the twelve, and began to tell them what

33 things should happen unto him; Saying, Behold, we go up to Jerufalem, and the Son of man shall be delivered unto the chief priests, and unto the scribes; and they shall condemn him to death, and

34 shall deliver him to the Gentiles; And they shall mock him, and shall scourge him, and shall spit upon him, and shall kill him: and the third day he fhall rife again.

And James and John the fons of Zebedee come unto him, saying, Master, we would that thou 36 shouldeft do for us whatsoever we shall defire. And

(i) All your losses shall be made up to you, even in this world, by inward peace and fatisfaction of mind, and joy in the Holy Ghost. See Mat. x. 39. Note, xix. 29. Note.

(h) They were amazed at Chrift's boldness in going to a place where his life was fought for; yet instead of allaying their fears, he confirmed them by exprefly foretelling his own fufferings; shewing thereby that he submitted to them knowingly and willingly.

he

he faid unto them, What would ye that I should 37 do for you? They said unto him, Grant unto us that we may fit, one on thy right hand, and the 38 other on thy left hand, in thy glory. But Jesus faid unto them, Ye know not what ye aik: can ye drink of the cup that I drink of? and be baptized with (1) the baptism that I am baptized with? 39 And they faid unto him, We can. And Jesus faid unto them, Ye shall indeed drink of the cup that I drink of: and with the baptism that 40 I am baptized withal, shall ye be baptized: But to fit on my right hand, and on my left hand, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for 41 whom it is prepared. And when the ten heard it, they began to be much displeased with James and 42 John. But Jesus called them to him, and faith unto them, Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles, exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon 43 them. But so shall it not be among you: but whofoever will be great among you, shall be your your mini44 fter: And whosoever of you will be the chiefeft, 45 shall be servant of all (m). For even the Son of man came not to be ministred unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

And they came to Jericho: and as he went out of Jericho with his disciples, and a great number of people, blind Bartimeus, the fon of Ti Timeus, fat 47 by the highway side, begging. And when he heard that it was Jefus of Nazareth, he began to cry out, and say, Jesus, thou son of David (n), have mercy on 48 me. And many charged him that he should hold: his peace: but he cried the more a great deal, 49 Thou Son of David, have mercy on me. And

Jefus

Jesus stood still, and commanded him to be called: and they call the blind man, faying unto him, Be of 50 good comfort, rise; he calleth thee. And he_cafting away his (o) garment, rose, and came to Jesus. 51 And Jesus answered and faid unto him, What wilt thou that 1 should do unto thee? The blind man faid unto him, Lord, that I might receive my fight. 52 And Jesus faid unto him, Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole. AND when they came nigh

to Jerufalem, unto

Bethphage, and Bethany, at the mount of (a) 2 Olives, he sendeth forth two of his disciples, And faith unto them, Go your way into the village over against you: and as foon as ye be entered into it, ye shall find a colt tied, whereon never man sat: loose him, 3 and bring him. And if any man say unto you, Why do ye this? say ye that the Lord hath need of him; 4 and straightway he will send him hither. And they went their way, and found the colt tied by the door without, in a place where two ways met: and they 5 loose him. And certain of them that stood there 6 faid unto them, What do ye loofing the colt? And they said unto them even as Jesus had commanded: 7 and they let them go. And they brought the colt to Jesus, and cast their garments on him; and he 8 fat upon him. And many fpread their garments in the way: and others cut down branches off the trees, 9 and strawed them in the way. And they that went before, and they that followed, cried, saying, Ho

(0) The upper garment of the Jews was loose; which the blind man threw off that he might run the faster. This is called a cloak.. Mat. v. 40.

sanna, fanna, blessed is he that cometh in the name of the 10 Lord. Bleffed be the kingdom of our father David, that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hofanna in II the highest. And Jesus entered into Jerufalem, and into the temple; and when he had looked round about upon all things, and now the eventide was come, he went out unto Bethany with the twelve..

12 And on the morrow when they were come from 13 Bethany, he was hungry. And feeing a fig-tree afar off, having leaves, he came, if haply he might find any thing thereon: and when he came to it, he found nothing but leaves, for the time of figs 14 was not (b) yet. And Jesus answered and faid unto it, No man eat fruit of thee hereafter for ever. And his disciples heard it.

And they come to Jerufalem: and Jesus went into the temple, and began to cast out them that fold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the money-changers, and the feats of them 16 that fold doves; And would not fuffer that any man 17 should carry any vessel through the temple. And

he taught, saying unto them, Is it not written, My house shall be called of all nations the house of 18 prayer (c)? but ye have made it a den of thieves. And the scribes and chief priests heard it, and fought how they might destroy him: for they feared him, because all the people was astonished at his doc19 trine. And when even was come, he went out -of the city.

20 And in the morning, as they passed by, they saw 21 the fig-tree dried up from the roots. And Peter call

ing to remembrance, faith unto him, Master,

(8) See Mat. xxi. 19. The time of gathering figs was not yet come, and therefore fruit was expected.

(c) That is, it shall be the house of prayer to all nations. A manifest prediction of the admiffion of the Gentiles into covenant with God.

behold, the fig-tree which thou cursedst is withered 22 away. And Jesus answering, faith unto them, 23 Have faith in God. For verily I say unto you, that whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea, and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall (d) believe that those things which he faith shall come to pass, 24 he shall have whatsoever he faith. Therefore I fay unto you, What things foever ye defire when ye (e) pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall 25 have them. And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses. 26 But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father which is is in heaven forgive your trespasses.

27 And they come again to Jerufalem: and as he was walking in the temple, there come to him the 28 chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders, And say unto him, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority to do these 29 things? And Jesus answered and said unto them, I will alfo afk of you one question, and answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these 30 things. The baptifm of John, was it from heaven, 31 or of men? anfwer me. And they reasoned with themselves, faying, If we shall say, From heaven, he will fay, Why then did ye not believe him? 32 But if we shall fay, Of men, they feared the people: for all men counted John, that he was a prophet 33 indeed. And they answered and said unto Jesus, We cannot tell. And Jesus answering faith unto them, Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things.

(d) See Mat. xxi. 21.

(e) When we pray, we must not only have a steadfast faith in the power, wifdom, and goodness of God, but our hearts must likewise be full of tenderness, compaffion, and forgiveness, towards our fellow

creatures.
