4 To God the Father, Son,
By all in earth and heaven,
And to the Holy Spirit, Three in One,
Eternal praise be given.

As once triumphant rang
When morning stars together sang,
Is now, as aye before,

And shall be so for evermore,

World without end. Amen. Amen.

382 Now abideth Faith, hope, and charity.

1 Cor. xiii. 13.

PIRIT of Truth, on this Thy day,
To Thee for help we cry,

SPI

To guide us through the dreary way
Of dark mortality.

2 We ask not, Lord, Thy cloven flame,
Or tongues of various tone;
But long Thy praises to proclaim
With fervour in our own.

3 We mourn not that prophetic skill
Is found on earth no more;
Enough for us to trace Thy will
In Scripture's sacred lore.

4 No heavenly harpings soothe our ear,
No mystic dreams we share ;

Yet hope to feel Thy comfort near,
And bless Thee in our prayer.

HEBER.

5 When tongues shall cease, and power decay, And knowledge empty prove,

Do Thou Thy trembling servants stay
With faith, with hope, with love.

Ps. cxix. 105.

AMP of our feet, whereby we trace
Our path when wont to stray;

Stream, from the fount of heavenly grace;
Brook, by the traveller's way;

2 Bread of our souls, whereon we feed ;
True manna from on high;
Our guide and chart, wherein we read
Of realms beyond the sky;

3 Pillar of fire, through watches dark,
And radiant cloud by day;

When waves would whelm our tossing bark,
Our anchor and our stay;

4 Word of the everlasting God,
Will of His glorious Son;
Without thee how could earth be trod,

Or heaven itself be won!

5 Lord, grant us all aright to learn
The wisdom it imparts;

And to its heavenly teaching turn,
With simple, childlike hearts.

[blocks in formation]

HE heavens declare Thy glory, Lord,
In every star Thy wisdom shines;
But when our eyes behold Thy word,

We read Thy name in fairer lines.

2 The rolling sun, the changing light,
And nights and days Thy power confess;
But the blest volume Thou hast writ
Reveals Thy justice and Thy grace.

3 Sun, moon, and stars convey Thy praise Round the whole earth, and never stand; So, when Thy truth began its race,

It touched and glanced on every land.

4 Nor shall Thy spreading Gospel rest,
Till through the world Thy truth has run;
Till Christ has all the nations blest
That see the light, or feel the sun.

5 Great Sun of Righteousness, arise,
Bless the dark world with heavenly light;
Thy Gospel makes the simple wise,
Thy laws are pure, Thy judgments right.

6 Thy noblest wonders here we view,
In souls renewed and sins forgiven;
Lord, cleanse my sins, my soul renew,
And make Thy word my guide to heaven.

EHOLD, the lofty sky
Declares its Maker God,

And all the starry worlds on high

Proclaim His power abroad.

2 The darkness and the light
Still keep their course the same;
While night to day, and day to night,
Divinely teach His name.
3 In every different land

Their general voice is known ;
They show the wonders of His Hand,
And orders of His throne.

4 Ye British lands rejoice;
Here He reveals His word;
We are not left to nature's voice
To bid us know the Lord.

5 His statutes and commands
Are set before our eyes;
He puts His Gospel in our hands,
Where our salvation lies,

6 His laws are just and pure,
His truth without deceit ;
His promises for ever sure,
And His rewards are great.

[blocks in formation]

THY law is perfect, Lord of light;
Thy testimonies sure;

ΤΗ

The statutes of Thy realm are right,
And Thy commandments pure.

2 Holy, inviolate Thy fear,

Enduring as Thy throne;

Thy judgments, chastening or severe,
Justice and truth alone.

3 Let these, O God! my soul convert,
And make Thy servant wise;
Let these be gladness to my heart,
The day-spring to mine eyes.

4 By these may I be warned betimes;
Who knows the guilt within?
Lord, save me from presumptuous crimes,
Cleanse me from secret sin !

5 So may the words my lips express
The thoughts that throng my mind,
O Lord, my strength and righteousness!
With Thee acceptance find.

LORD, I have made Thy word my choice,

There shall my noblest powers rejoice,
My warmest thoughts engage.

2 I'll read the histories of Thy love,
And keep Thy laws in sight;
While through the promises I rove,
With ever fresh delight.

3 'Tis a broad land of wealth unknown,
Where springs of life arise,

Seeds of immortal bliss are sown,
And hidden glory lies.

4 The best relief that mourners have;
It makes our sorrows blest;
Our fairest hope beyond the grave,
And our eternal rest.

How good Thy works appear!
Open mine eyes to read Thy word,
And see Thy wonders there.
