DAILY BIBLE THOUGHTS FOR THE MONTH.

PRIMROSES, PLEASE!

CATHARINE ELLIS wishes to thank some unknown friends for cuffs received since Christmas; also for the note of praise from Ambleside; for two boxes of lovely primroses, which gave great joy. She hopes many old flower friends and new will send spring flowers to cheer sick and weary ones in this great city.-115, Sloane-street, London, S. W.

MONTH

DAILY BIBLE THOUGHTS FOR THE
ON THE UNION OLD TESTAMENT READINGS.

BY B. A. ROWAN.

"I rejoice at Thy Word, as one that findeth great spoil."-Ps. cxix. 162. NEHEMIAH III. TO JOB IX.

A

PRIL 1.—Nehemiah iii. 5. Compare with Acts xv. 26, and 1 John iii. 16. They repaired, but without zeal. Let us not offer unto the Lord our God that which is without cost (2 Sam. xxiv. 24).

April 2.-Ch. iv. 9.

"Watching unto prayer," is where we so often come short. We ask for power to overcome our enemies, but forget to "set a watch" (see Hab. ii. 1; Matt. xxvi. 41).

April 3.-Ch. v. 13. All the people "yielded" and praised. (Compare with 2 Chron. xxix. 28.) As long as the burnt offerings continued, the praise continued. If you want to praise, first say " Amen" to the daily crosses as they come.

April 4.-Ch. vi. Nearness to the Lord will enable us like Nehemiah to discern and avoid the most specious temptations. How needful this is when we remember 2 Cor. xi. 13, 14, 15.

April 5.-Ch. vii. 2. Hanani's qualifications for a post of honour were just "faithfulness" and "the fear of God." How far are we "faithful in the least" in our homes?

April 6. Ch. viii. It is those who are living a life of separation, and are following closely the written Word, who know the "joy of the Lord," and who, being fed themselves, are able to send portions to others.

April 7. Ch. ix. This wonderful record of God's longsuffering seems just to meet the need of those among us who are conscious of backsliding, and longing to return to Him again. Notice the oft repeated "Yet," and because you are in distress, make a fresh sure covenant with Him again.

April 8.-Ch. x. Let us see that we bring our first fruits to Godviz., the best of our strength, time, talents, and opportunities.

DAILY BIBLE THOUGHTS FOR THE MONTH.

93

April 9.-Ch. xi. 24. "At the King's hand." See Acts xi. 21, and Job v. 18, for the result of this blessed position, and claim the promise in Isa. xlii. 6, linked with John x. 28.

April 10.—Ch. xii. 31. Are we not reminded of the two great companies of "them that give thanks" now? The Church Triumphant, who have gone up by the "stairs" of the City of David above, and the Church Militant, not far parted from them, but "standing still" in the prison gate, some in the "furnace of affliction." All are singing the same new song of "Worthy the Lamb" (Rev. v. 12).

April 11.-Ch. xiii. 3-8. We cannot fail to have been struck with the uncompromising way in which separation is enjoined upon God's people both in Ezra and Nehemiah. (Refer to last clause of Rom. xiv. 23, and 1 John iii. 3.)

April 12.-Esther i. 12. Christ "came unto His own, and His own received Him not" (John i. 11; Acts xviii. 5, 6; Luke xiv. 15-25). "How shall we escape if we neglect so great salvation?" (Heb. ii. 3).

April 13.-Ch. ii. Esther (secret, hidden) may be taken as a beautiful type of Christ's Church. Now brought into the King's House (verse. 8), Heb. iii. 6, and being prepared by the Holy Ghost (verse 9), 1 Cor. vi. 11; Ps. xlv. 13, 14; Rev. xix. 8, till without spot she is presented to Him at His appearing (2 Cor. xi. 2; Eph. v. 27).

[ocr errors]

April 14. Ch. iii. (See Isa. viii. 9, 10, and Ps. xxxiii. 10.) But "all the Lord's commandments are sure.' (See Ps. cxi. 7; Ps. xxxiii. 9-11.) April 15.-Ch. iv. 16. The "New and Living Way into the Holiest " has been "consecrated" for us, but let us remember at what a cost! The flaming sword of judgment which guarded it (Gen. iii. 24) pierced the Son of God first.

April 16.-Ch. v. 1. (See Ch. iv. 2.) Only as clothed with the spotless robe of Christ's righteousness can we appear before God (Matt. xxii. 11, 12; Isa. lxi. 3; Zech. iii. 3-6).

April 17.-Ch. vi. "Whom the King delighteth to honour"-those who serve Him (John xii. 26).

April 18.-Ch. vii. 2. We are invited to make known all our requests. "Ye have not because ye ask not." (See Phil. iv. 6, and the result in verse 7).

April 19.-Ch. viii. 15. Ps. xxx. 11, was exactly true in Mordecai's case, but notice the following verse of the Psalm and compare with 1 Pet. ii. 9.

April 20.-Ch. ix. 2. "It was turned to the contrary." We have the whole power of God for us (Rom. viii. 31). Jacob said: "All these things are against me" (Gen. xlii. 36). Faith can say: "Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors" (Rom. viii. 37).

April 21.-Ch. x. 3. Compare with Rom. xiv. 17, 18, and let us ask that we may be "Filled with the Spirit" (Eph. v. 18).

April 22.—Job i. 19. If a great wind of sorrow is blowing upon us, let us remember who "gathers the wind in His fists." And how many

94

scripture reading UNION.

blessings have resulted from His winds! (See Gen. viii. 1; Num. xi. 31 ; Ezek. xxxvii. 9; Acts ii., 2; 2 Sam. xxii. 11.)

April 23. Ch. ii. 10. We shall do well to ponder the lesson of perfect submission here and in ch. i. 21.

April 24.—Ch. iii. 23. "Whom God hath hedged in." (Refer to Ps. xxxiv. 7, ch. i. 10; Zech. ii. 5.) Therefore, "though an host should encamp against me my heart shall not fear" (Ps. xxvii. 3).

April 25.-Ch. iv. 3-5. It is easy to exhort others to trust God when He is prospering us, but a greater thing to trust still when He lays His rod upon us. Yet one great object of chastening is to teach us how to strengthen and comfort others (Heb. xii. 11, 12, 13).

April 26.-Ch. v. 19, 20. Refer to the seven things in Rom. viii. 35, none of which can separate us from the love of Christ.

April 27.-Ch. vi. 23, 24. "Deliver me,' "Redeem me,' ""Teach

me." God says: "I will redeem" (Hos. xiii. 14); "I will teach thee " (Ps. xxxii. 8); "I will deliver thee" (Ps. 1. 15).

April 28.-Ch. vii. 20. "I have sinned." The first words of a repentant sinner (1 Sam. xv. 24; 2 Sam. xii. 13; Ps. xli. 4; Luke xv. 18), and the continual language of the sinner saved (1 Tim. i. 15;1 John i. 9).

April 29.-Ch. viii. 9. David used almost the same words (1 Chron. xxix. 15). They remind us how short a time is left for us to witness for Christ here.

April 30.-Ch. ix. 33. (See 1 Tim. ii. 5.) Christ is our "Daysman " linking us eternally with the Father.
