HALLELUJAH FROM THE DESERT.

HALLELUJAH FROM THE DESERT!

A LETTER FROM EGYPT.

[graphic]

ANY of our readers must have had friends or relatives in the late war in Egypt, and they specially will read with keen interest the following letter which we have been given leave to publish. It is from a Scripture reader, who was formerly a soldier in the 71st Highlanders. Now he is "to the front " in the Gospel war; the war that kills enemies by changing them into friends. Pray for the Highland and other regiments still left in Egypt. Praise for them, too, so that their Hallelujah and ours may sound together before the throne of God! "Khedive's Palace, Cairo, Egypt,

"19th September, 1882.

"MY DEAR BROTHER JACK,--You will observe that G. P. M.' has got into a palace in Time. I never expected that I was to shout for the Lord in an earthly palace; but here I am, and Mathers (brother Scripture reader) and I last night had a shout for the King of kings in the large hall, a place, doubtless, where Gospel music had never before been heard.

If I did not tell you before, I do so now, that at Ramleh we fired much Gospel ammunition. Many were wounded, and healed by salvation through the Blood-Hallelujah! After ten days sharp shooting at that place, the Highland Brigade embarked at Alexandria for Ismailia I was on board the 'Nepaul' with the good old 'Forty-twa.' Every night we opened fire on the forecastle (i.e., preached the Gospel), and every night there was fruit to the glory of our risen Lord. Just fancy, Jack, one night seven souls surrendered and were born anew-ransomed souls. We lay in the harbour for a week, and there we sang 'Hold the Fort,' in grand style. A similar work was going on in the 'France' with Mathers and the 74th. Of course, you dear ones were praying for us. Hence: They that remain at home shall share the spoil.' "We disembarked on the 9th of September, and the Brigade marched through the desert of sand. Man, it was hard on the dear lads, but our God remembered His twa wee laddies. We fell in with the Mounted Infantry, and through them the Lord gave us a horse each. Just fancy, Jamie and I trotting through the desert on an Arab steed, and the Lord, when He went to Egypt, was on an ass. Well, brother, it's just like Him. Jamie said, 'He kent brawly we needed a lift home, and He has given us a horse.' After being in the saddle seven hours
