DAILY BIBLE THOUGHTS FOR THE month.

was the Light of men" (John i. 4)-"held fast" and "held forth" by those who are seen as lights in the world" (Phil. ii. 15, R.V.; Is. lx. 12-20), is fruitful and light-giving (Ps. cxix. 130).

Oct. 20.-Ch. viii. 35. "They came to Jesus, and found the man." It is well if, when men seek us, they must come to Jesus to find us. Well if the resting-place of Faith prove the abiding place of Love, our Home as well as our Refuge, which all recognise as such (Ps. xci. 2 ; 1 Sam. xxii. 23; John xv. 4; Cant. ii. 14).

Oct. 21.-Ch. viii. 55. See the result of the entrance into the death chamber of Him who is the Resurrection and the Life (Eph. ii. 1, 5, 6). "He hath abolished death," and the new Life imparted by His quickening is perfect-" She arose straightway (Mark v. 41, 42)-and progressive, "she walked" (Luke vii. 14, 15; John xi. 43, 44; Acts iii. 6-8; Gal. ii. 20; Rom. vi. 4; Heb. vi. 1).

Oct. 22.-Ch. ix. 9. He desired to see Him, "but he never rose up and came to Jesus" (Luke xv. 20), for the "garment spotted by the flesh" (Jude 23) hindered his coming to the Saviour from sin " (Matt. i. 21). "The right eye not plucked out" (Mark vi. 18) made the "desire to see Jesus" fall short of salvation (Matt. xix. 21, Acts xxiv. 25, 26).

Oct. 23.-Ch. ix. 32.

22;

"They saw His glory." No marvel Peter exclaimed, "Master, it is good for us to be here." Yet there was something better than sight. The overshadowing cloud hid the glory but revealed the personal presence of their Lord (Jesus was found alone) and the Father's voice bid them hear Him-the Word Incarnate"able to save their souls" (John i. 1-14; 1 Peter i. 21-23).

Oct. 24.-Ch. ix. 50. Against or for Christ? Only the two positions. Which is ours? Have we responded to His claim, "Ye are not your own" with "Thine are we"? (1 Chr. xii. 18). "Whither Thou goest we will go," though the following involves "leaving all." If so, then, "they two went . . . and "came to Bethlehem "—the House of Bread (Ruth i. 19)—with its glorious inscription, "All that is Mine is thine" (Luke xv. 31, R. V.).

Oct. 25.-Ch. ix. 50. "The Son of Man hath not where to lay His head." Let us throw wide open the innermost chambers of our being, and say, "There is room in my heart, Lord Jesus, there is room in my heart for Thee." Not in the guest-chamber only, for, "Why shouldst Thou be as a way-faring man, that turneth aside to tarry for a night?" (Jer. xiv. 8). "Come in," and "leave not." Listen! "I am come (Cant. v. 1). "I will never leave thee" (Heb. xiii. 5).

Oct. 26. Ch. x. 1. Possibly the secret of so much failure in the Master's work, lies in the not waiting always for His sending. "Going from Him, before His face, into every city and place," could we come short of our commission in verse 9? Would not this rather be the inevitable result, "The power of the Lord was present to heal " ? Oct. 27.-Ch. x. 17. The "sent ones returned with joy, having proved the possibilities of His name. "Even the devils," &c. Is this

the ground of our joy, "Not I, but Christ"? He will crown our faith, like theirs, with the fulness of blessing. over all the power of the enemy" (Matt. xvii. 20; 8; Acts iv. 7-10).

give you power ・・ ch. xxi. 21; Acts i.

Oct. 28.-Ch. x. 33. "Came where he was." Oh! the wondrous descent of the Son of God! emptying Himself of His glory that He might reach us in our low estate (Phil. ii. 4-8; Luke xv. 2-4; Matt. xviii. 12). Is this the reason we miss souls? Standing above them, stretching forth the hand, but failing to come down into the very depths, just where they are? Let us, as "fishers of men," "" consider Him," and "follow in His steps."

Oct. 29.—Ch. xi. 13. “How much more?" Jesus asks, in reference to "the promise of the Father" (Acts i. 4, 5, 8). Shall we not claim all, and say, "Lord, give the 'much more' exceeding abundantly, above all that we ask or think? Filled unto all the fulness of God?"

(Eph. iii. 19, R. V.).

Oct. 30.-Ch. xi. 24. "My house," still. Swept and garnished, perhaps, but not "made over to the Master, not "under entirely new management"; so the old tenant returns at will, and takes possession. Shall he "keep his goods"? or shall the Son make us free indeed! (John viii. 34-37; Rom. vi. 14, 18, 22). He is able.

Oct. 31.-Ch. xi. 31. "A greater than Solomon is here" (1 Kings. iv. 21-34). None other than the Son of God, the King of Glory, the indwelling Christ (John xiv. 23), manifesting forth His glory through the holy lives of His "separated" ones. Have we crowned Him King? (2 Sam. iii. 21). And are we so yielded, that His mighty power can work in us mightily, nothing hindered? (Eph. i. 17-23).
