SCRIPTURE:READING UNION.

Lord;" and let us not forget that to disregard it in the very least matter is to disregard Him.

Jan. 24.—Ch. xi. 14. See how the Lord works along with human agents, and how all success in rightly conducted effort is to be ascribed to Him.

Jan. 25.--Ch. xii. 18. Observe not only the thoroughness of their identification of themselves with David, but the reason of it-that God was on his side. Let us just as thoroughly and openly make common cause with those who are God's people.

Jan. 26.-Ch. xiii. 2. See how to make all propositions and plans, not only "if it seem good unto you," but, also, if it seem to "be of the Lord." How many doubtful things would be left undone by us, if only what appeared definitely of the Lord seemed good unto us.

Jan. 27. Ch. xiv. 14. "David enquired again of God." He did not rest satisfied with the first inquiry (ver. 10), but renewed it, when the enemies again appeared, to get exact details of action suitable for the special need. Thus let us again and again ask guidance in every rising need, and not act of necessity in one case as in another.

Jan. 28. Ch. xv. 1.-As the ark was the outward and visible symbol of God's presence, so let us "prepare a place " in our hearts for Him to dwell in, whom the ark represented.

Jan. 29.—Ch. xvi. 23. Let us "show forth from day to day His salvation" in a joyous, happy exhibition of the reality of religion to all about us.

Jan. 30.-Ch. xvii. 23.

the promises of God.

Jan. 31.--Ch. xviii. 11.

Note one method of true prayer, which is to plead

Again we are reminded by David's example of the privilege of dedicating, at all events a portion of all our increasing possessions to God's service. A blessing will always attend it.

AUSTRALIAN SUNDAY SCHOLARS.

HOW AUSTRALIAN SUNDAY SCHOLARS RECEIVED THE QUEEN'S GRANDSONS.

BY THE BISHOP OF BALLAARAT.

IKE many of the sons of our Island Home, the sons of our Prince of Wales love the sea. They were, like their father, trained as midshipmen on board the Britannia, and had to work hard at learning every part of a sailor's duty. They are dressed very like the lad in our picture, and could quickly run up an ensign, as he is doing, until it floats proudly from the top of the highest mast. They have now been a voyage round the world, and were welcomed everywhere with the greatest enthusiasm. Let us hear something of their doings on the other side of the world from one of our Bishops :

The "Detached Squadron," under Admiral Lord Clanwilliam, reached Australia from the Cape in May, last year, and its arrival was hailed with special enthusiasm by reason of the fact that one of the five vessels composing it, the Bacchante, had on board the two royal" middies," Prince Albert Victor and Prince George Frederick of Wales. Whatever may be the faults of British colonists, defective loyalty is not one of them. The Queen is the object of a profound and universal admiration and reverence throughout her Australian dominions; and the keenest interest is felt in all that concerns the well-being and honour of the Royal Family. So soon, therefore, as it became known that the princes had reached Victoria, and would have a few days at their disposal, invitations for his guests poured in upon the governor, and such preparations as time permitted were vigorously made to give the sons of the heir-apparent an enthusiastic welcome.

They visited Ballaarat, at very short notice, on Wednesday, 29th June, It was mid-winter, and the biting wind and rainstorms of the preceding week looked ill for the weather on "Reception Day." But a gloomy morning gave place to true Queen's weather" as the day wore on, and the afternoon, though cold, was charming.

66

Arrangements had been made to show the princes and their following-about forty in number-the wonderful gold-mines of Ballaarat, to impress them duly with the scale and dignity of our public buildings, of which, unquestionably, a city not thirty years old may well be proud, and to acquaint them with the beauties of its environs, especially of the charming wood-girdled lake at its
