The watchmen on her walls appear,

And day and night proclaim, "Zion's deliverance is near,

Make mention of her name."

Go through, go through, prepare the ways,
The gates wide open spread;
The standard of the people raise,
To glorious triumph led.

In ev'ry clime, through ev'ry land,
Proclaim the joyful word;
"The holy people are at hand,
Redeemed of the Lord."

ZION'S HUMILIATION.

"The ways of Zion do mourn, because none come to the solemn feasts: all her gates are desolate: her priests sigh, her virgins are afflicted, and she is in bitterness."-LAM. i. 4.

H! how is Zion's glory gone,

OH!

And vengeance like a flood,

Hath quench'd her power, and not a stone
Marks where her temple stood !
How are thy streets, Jerusalem,

By careless strangers trod !
And crush'd thy once proud diadem,
Before the wrath of God!

How are thy friendless exiles sent
Through distant lands to roam!
Yet in each place of banishment,
They cannot find a home.

O Lord, look down with pitying eye,
Upon thine ancient race;

And bring thy promis'd mercy nigh,
And shew thy saving grace.

Remove the veil that long hath hid
The Saviour from their sight;
Subdue their prejudice, and bid
Their darkness turn to light.
O, bring thy scattered sheep again,
And feed them as of old;

Let Christ o'er all his people reign,
One Shepherd and one fold.

FAITHFULNESS TO ZION.

"But thou, O Lord, shalt endure for ever; and thy remembrance unto all generations. Thou shalt arise, and have mercy upon Zion."-PSALM cii. 12, 13.

HOU God our Saviour shalt endure,

THOU

Thy years unchang'd, eternal Lord! Thy grace through every age secure ; Sweet is the promise of thy word.

92

Thou shalt arise, thy grace display,
And Zion triumph in thy power;
Nor shall thy promis'd mercy stay,
Beyond thine own appointed hour.

Thy servants for that mercy wait,
And lift to thee their longing eyes;
Weep over Judah's ruin'd state,
And watch to see her glories rise.

Haste then, thou universal Lord,
Thy name let Gentile nations fear!
Till, by remotest kings ador'd,
Thy glories through the earth appear.

Let Zion now thy name repeat;
Judah thy wonders shall record;

And kingdoms crowding round thy seat,
Own thee their Saviour and their Lord.

MERCY TO ZION.

"Thou shalt arise, and have mercy upon Zion: for the time to favour her, yea, the set time, is come. For thy servants take pleasure in her stones, and favour the dust thereof."

PSALM cii. 13, 14.

HOU wilt arise, and mercy thou

THOU

To Zion wilt extend;

The time of mercy, now, the time

Foreset, is come to end.

For in the very stones thereof,
Thy servants do delight;

And on the dust thereof they have
Compassion in their sight.

Then shall the heathen people fear
The Lord's most holy name;
And all the kings on earth shall dread
His glory and his fame.

Then they in Zion shall declare
The Lord's most holy name;
And in Jerusalem set forth

The praises of the same.

Then, with the people of the land,
All kingdoms in accord

Shall be assembled, to perform

Their service to the Lord.

ZION'S DAY OF GRACE.

"When the Lord shall build up Zion, he shall appear in his glory."

[ocr errors]

PSALM cii. 16.

LORD! arise, and Zion view,

With a propitious face;

For now her time is come, thine own

Appointed day of grace.

94

Her scattered ruins by thy saints
With pity are survey'd ;

They grieve to see her lofty spires
In dust and rubbish laid.

The name and glory of the Lord
All heathen kings shall fear,
When He shall Zion build again,
And in full state appear.

And they in Zion, where He dwelt,
Shall celebrate his fame;
And through the holy city sing

Loud praises to his name:

When all the tribes assembling there,

Their solemn vows address,

And neighb'ring lands with glad consent
The Lord their God confess.

ZION'S SALVATION.

"Say ye to the daughter of Zion, Behold, thy salvation cometh."

ISAIAH Ixii. 11.

N the mountain's top appearing,

ON

Lo! the sacred herald stands,

Welcome news to Zion bearing,
Zion long in hostile lands:

Mourning captive!

God himself shall loose thy bands.
