And to our God our homage pay,
In fervent praise and prayer.

With food we have been fed,

In needful raiment dress'd;

Though multitudes have begg'd their bread In rags, with grief oppress'd.

Those blessings-strength and health,
We have in mercy shar'd;
Though numbers, in the midst of wealth,

Have of them been debarr'd.

Reason, and speech, and sight,

Our God still deigns to give;

Though some ne'er spoke, nor saw the light, And some in madness live.

Though thousands never heard
Of Jesu's dying love,
Grace we enjoy to get prepar'd
To dwell with him above.

O may these gifts excite

Our hearts to grateful praise;
And may we sleep in peace this night,
And serve him all our days!

EVENING HYMN.

"Thou makest darkness, and it is night."-PSALM CİV. 20.

HROUGH the day thy love hath spar'd us,

THRO

Wearied we lie down to rest;

Through the silent watches guard us,

Let no foe our peace molest:

Saviour, thou our guardian be,

Sweet it is to trust in thee!

Pilgrims, here on earth, and strangers,
Dwelling in the midst of foes,
Us, and ours, preserve from dangers;
In thy arms may we repose:
And when life's short day is past,
Rest with Thee, in heaven, at last.

61

EVENING HYMN.

"I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety."-PSALM iv. 8.

LORY to thee, my God this night,

GL

For all the blessings of the light;
Keep me, O keep me, King of kings,
Under thy own Almighty wings.

Forgive me, Lord, for thy dear Son,
The ills which I this day have done,

That with the world, myself and thee,
I, ere I sleep, at peace may be.

Teach me to live that I may dread
The grave as little as my bed;
Teach me to die, that so I may
With joy behold the judgment day.

Should death itself my sleep invade,
Why should I be of death afraid?
Protected by thy saving arm,

Though he may strike, he cannot harm.

For death is life, and labour rest,
If with thy gracious presence blest:
Then welcome sleep or death to me,
I'm still secure, for still with thee.

SATURDAY EVENING.

"Hitherto hath the Lord helped us."-1. SAMUEL Vii. 12.

AFELY through another week

SA

God has brought us on our way,

Let us now a blessing seek

On the approaching Sabbath-day:
Day of all the week the best,

Emblem of eternal rest.

Mercies, multiplied each hour,
Gracious Lord, our praise demand:
Guarded by Almighty Power,
Nourish'd by thy bounteous hand,
Now from pain and trouble free,
May we rest this night in thee.

When the morn shall bid us rise,
May we feel thy presence near,
May thy glory meet our eyes,

When we in thy house appear:
Teach our youthful hearts, O Lord,
Meekly to receive thy word.

May the Gospel's joyful sound
Fill our souls with joy and peace;
Make the fruits of grace abound,

Sin forgive, our strength increase :
Thus may all our Sabbaths prove,
Earnests of the rest above.

LORD'S DAY MORNING.

"This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it."-PSALM CXviii. 24.

HIS is the day the Lord hath made!

THIS

He calls the hours his own:

Let heav'n rejoice, let earth be glad,
And praise surround the throne.

To-day He rose and left the dead,
And Satan's empire fell;

To-day the saints his triumph spread,
And all his wonders tell.

Hosanna to th' anointed King,
To David's holy Son;

Help us, O Lord, descend and bring
Salvation from the throne.

Blest be the Lord who comes to men
With messages of grace;

Who comes in God his Father's name
To save our sinful race.

Hosanna, in the highest strains

The church on earth can raise ;

The highest heav'ns in which he reigns,
Shall give him nobler praise.

64

THE SABBATH.

"Call the Sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord, honourable."

ISAIAH lviii. 13.

E hail this day of sacred rest,

WE

Day of all others far the best;
Honour'd by God in various ways,
Improv'd by saints to shew his praise.
