Thou hast the glad tidings brought
Of salvation, by thee wrought;
Wrought to set thy people free;
Wrought to bring our souls to thee.

May we follow and adore

Thee, our Saviour, more and more;
Guide and bless us with thy love,
Till we join thy saints above.

MORNING HYMN,

"My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O Lord; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up."-PSALM V. 3.

AWAKE, my soul, and with the sun

Thy daily course of duty run;

Shake off dull sloth, and early rise
To pay thy morning sacrifice.

Glory to God, who safe hath kept,

And hath preserv'd me while I slept ;

Grant, Lord, that when from death I wake,

I may of endless bliss partake.

Lord, I my vows to thee renew;

Disperse my sins as morning dew;

Guard ev'ry spring of thought and will,

And with my heart be present still.

May all my converse be sincere ;
My conscience as the noonday clear:
For thy all-seeing eye surveys
My secret thoughts, and all my ways.

Direct, controul, suggest this day,
All I shall do, or think, or say;

That all my pow'rs, with all their might,
In thy sole service may unite.

MORNING HYMN.

"In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun, which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race."-PSALM XIX. 4, 5.

MY God, who makes the sun to know

His proper hour to rise,

And to give light to all below,

Doth send him round the skies.

When from the chambers of the east
His morning race begins,

He never tires, nor stops to rest,
But round the world he shines.

So, like the sun, would I fulfil
The business of the day;
Begin my work betimes, and still
March on my heav'nly way.

Give me,

O Lord, thy early grace,

Nor let my soul complain

That the young morning of my days
Has all been spent in vain.

MORNING HYMN.

"Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge."-PSALM XIX. 2.

GOD! how constant is Thy love!
Thy gifts are every evening new,
And morning mercies from above
Gently distil like early dew.

Thou spread'st the curtain of the night,
Great Guardian of our sleeping hours!
Thy sovereign word restores the light,
And strengthens nature's wearied pow'rs.

Thine arm sustain'd us while we slept,
Else had our eyelids closed in death:
Our life in safety still is kept,

And still we breathe our wonted breath.

That life we yield to Thy command:
To Thee we consecrate our days;
Perpetual blessings from Thy hand
Demand perpetual songs of praise.

57

MORNING HYMN.

"I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the Lord sustained me."

PSALM iii. 5.

HAT blessings, Lord, we share!

WHAT

How rich thy love and grace!

We every hour enjoy thy care,
And owe thee warmest praise.

We laid us down and slept,

By thee we were sustain'd;
From every danger we were kept,
And needful strength regain'd.

While thus our rest was sweet,
Many no rest could find;

Many were call'd their Judge to meet,
And were to death consign'd.

But we are kindly spar'd,

On praying ground we stand;
Time still is given to get prepar'd,
To dwell at thy right hand.

O may we thankful prove,

For this thy sparing grace;

And when we from this world remove,
Behold thee face to face!

EVENING HYMN.

"Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense; and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice."-PSALM CXli. 2.

L

ORD, I have pass'd another day,

And come to thank thee for thy care: Forgive my faults in work and play, And listen to my evening prayer.

Thy favour gives me daily bread,
And friends, who all my wants supply;
And safely now I'll rest my head,
Preserv'd and guarded by thine eye.

Look down in pity, and forgive
Whate'er I've said or done amiss;
And help me every day I live,

To serve thee better than on this.

Now, while I speak, be pleased to take
A helpless child beneath thy care;
And condescend, for Jesus' sake,

To listen to my evening prayer.

59

EVENING HYMN.

"To shew forth thy lovingkindness in the morning, and thy faith

fulness every night."-PSALM Xcii. 2.

HE mercies of the day,

THE

We now in mind would bear;
