Did undertake our great concern:
Our ransom cost his blood.

And now He reigns above,
He sends his Spirit down
To shew the wonders of his love,
And make his Gospel known.

O may that Spirit teach,

And make my heart receive

Those truths which all thy servants preach,
And all thy saints believe.

Then shall I praise the Lord,

In a more cheerful strain,

That I was taught to read his word,

And have not learnt in vain.

RESTRAINING GRACE.

"Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults. Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins."PSALM XIX. 12, 13.

EST Instructor, from thy ways

BES

Who can tell how oft he strays?
Save from error's growth our mind:
Leave not, Lord, one root behind.

Cleanse us from the guilt that lies
Wrapt within our hearts' disguise :
Let us thence, by Thee renew'd,
Each presumptuous sin exclude.

Let our tongue, from falsehood free,
Speak the words approv'd by Thee:
To thine all-observing eyes
Let our thoughts accepted rise.

While we thus thy name adore,
And thy healing grace implore,
Blest Redeemer! bow thine ear;
God, our strength! propitious hear!

THE KING OF ISRAEL.

"Thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel."

JOHN i. 49.

ESUS, we hail thee Israel's King!

JE

And now to Thee our tribute bring; Nor do we fear to bow the knee';

They worship God, who worship Thee.

Hail, Israel's King, enthron'd in light! Whose glory never shone more bright Than when, by trembling friends betray'd, Thy foes insulting homage paid.

An object of contempt beneath,
And judg'd by men to suffer death;
By angels own'd, admir'd, ador'd;
The great, the everlasting Lord.

Reign, mighty King, for ever reign!
Thy cause throughout the world maintain :
Let Israel's King his triumphs spread,
And crowns of glory wreathe his head.

SYMPATHY OF CHRIST.

"For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted."-HEBREWS ii. 18.

W

HEN gathering clouds around I view, And days are dark, and friends are few, On Him I lean, who, not in vain, Experienc'd every human pain; He sees my wants, allays my fears, And counts and treasures up my tears.

If aught should tempt my soul to stray
From heavenly wisdom's narrow way,
To flee the good I would pursue,
Or do the sin I would not do,

Still He, who felt temptation's power,
Shall guard me in that dangerous hour.

F

And, oh! when I have safely past
Through every conflict but the last,
Still, Lord, unchanging, watch beside
My dying bed,—for Thou hast died;
Then point to realms of endless day,
And wipe the latest tear away.

JESUS A REFUGE.

"My soul trusteth in thee: yea, in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities be overpast."-PSALM lvii. 1.

ESU, lover of my soul,

JES

Let me to thy bosom fly,
While the billows near me roll,
While the tempest still is high:
Hide me, O my Saviour, hide,
Till the storm of life is past;

Safe into the haven guide;
Oh, receive my soul at last!

Other refuge have I none,

Hangs my helpless soul on Thee;
Leave, O leave me not alone,
Still support and comfort me:
All my trust on thee is stay'd,
All my help from thee I bring;
Cover my defenceless head,

With the shadow of thy wing.

Plenteous grace with thee is found,
Grace to pardon all my sin;
Let the healing streams abound;
Make and keep me pure within:
Thou of life the fountain art;
Freely let me take of thee;
Spring thou up within my heart;
Rise to all eternity.

53 THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.

"This is his name, whereby he shall be called, The Lord our Righteousness."-JEREMIAH Xxiii. 6.

RETHREN! let us join to bless

BRE

Christ, the Lord our Righteousness :

Let our praise to Him be given,
High at God's right hand in heaven.

Son of God! to thee we bow:
Thou art Lord, and only thou;
Thou the blessed Virgin's Seed,
Glory of thy Church, and Head.

Thee the angels ceaseless sing;
Thee we praise, our Priest and King:
Worthy is thy name of praise,

Full of glory, full of grace.
